Has anyone ever used digital ocean for deploying web crawlers/bots/scrapers? They are pretty cheap 5$ a server/mo. Any alternatives?

Only for web hosting, but I don't think there's any problem with using them for scrapers.
Some people used them for crypto currency mining, if they allowed that I guess they will have nothing against you either :)

I have used them for crawlers/scrapers but not for bot. They won't have a problem with it ( atleast did not have a problem with me), but make sure you use proxy for the scrapers and don't ever try to run a cron less frequently than 5 minutes.

Since they are VPS, is it really necessary to put proxies? If I do, how much should I spend on proxies?

I'm currently using the $5 ones which is the basic one.

They're a beast, been using them for months but not for botting.

Always use proxies for these stuff. ips tend to get blacklisted when you do botting, scraping and stuff like that and they wont change your ip if that happens. So it's using proxies is better.

The thing is ... if you do not use a proxy, you are exposing your real IP to the server you are scraping. It is not related to the type of server, but your IP address. If you use proxy, your real IP is not exposed, and not blacklisted.

They're a good value but if you need some power a single core with 512MB of Ram is not going to cut it. I like to use a few cores and throw a few gigs of Ram at my bots.
