On a brand new site, why does Google show different versions of my page depending on how I search?

If I search site:keyword.net, I see the initial empty Wordpress site cached in Google. If I search keyword.net, I see the updated version from a recent crawl after I added some content. Same computer, same IP, etc. Why is there a discrepancy?

Within the first 48 hours of creation. I just started building a few backlinks last evening, then several hours later I noticed the two versions in google.

I was kind of intrigued more that it occurred than the actual discrepancy. I like to understand things. I seem to learn more about SEO by watching what occurs immediately after I make a new submission, edit a site, etc.
