I pulled a report of my site rankings and found out I am ranking #1 for a very competitive keyword if using the phrase, meaning "keyword" but when you broad search for just keyword, I am many pages below....

wondering why that is and what I can do it improve my broad search results?

    Thoughts?

I think you're confusing yourself with phrase and exact. Here's a quick rundown on exact, broad and phrase.

    1. Exact is when you have your keyword in speech marks, this symbol: ", for ex. "banana yellow"
    2. Broad is when you just type your keyword normally: banana yellow
    3. Phrase is when your keyword banana is mentioned with other keywords: banana yellow

With exact you get to type only "banana yellow"; with broad, the keyword may appear with other searches at a random order being searched, like: yellow monkeys like banana, or banana like monkey yellow. Here, the keyword banana yellow may show up in several different orders. As for phrase, the keyword banana yellow shows up as in exact but also adds other keywords to it, for ex.: banana yellow peanut butter, banana yellow macarena, banana yellow family guy. So phrase match can be more accurate than broad but it's still less exact than exact match.

If you're #1 for a competitive keyword, stop. This is all that matters.

Thanks, Yes I was confused a little when trying to interpret. I know broad is just enter words press search, phrase is [enter words] and exact is "enter words"

I am ranking for exact, if my above are correct. will continue to optimize for other keywords now...
