I saw in the Penguin 3.0 threads that some (even legit and white hat) local sites were hit. In my niches I haven´t seen any drastic changes in the top 10 though.

How many of you have lost local sites? Please share also some details like age, the country you are ranking for, real business sites or fake site, # of indexed sites, what type of linkbuilding (most important imo), social signals etc. about your punished sites.

    Thank you!

Well I was using the strategy where I had my main site. then i build a dozen web 2.0 sites such as wordpress, weebly, tumblr then i would build lower quality spam links or whatever i was being given by the out sourced people i hired to build them. I was reading a strategy online last year about this i thought it was fool proof i guess im the only fool. I have no clue what to do but a few of my competitors that were knocked down a few years ago did absolutely nothing to fix or change their link profile but they appear much higher then me now. They have the same if not more spam and anchor text.

City + keywords saw a lot of rolling around. Too early to come at any conclusion.

Had a local business website - was ranked 1-5 for the last 6-7 months, traffic was good (not amazing since the organic results for local business are way below the yelp results and the 7 pack G maps).
but now it all change...i got hit hard and most of my rankings drops out of the 100's.
    got good citations with reviews.
the business DOES NOT have a phisical location and i think it might be the issue.
i see my competitors ranking very well with pretty bad backlinks profile, but with stable google places listing and good citations profile...

I actually increased ranking with 2 of my newer clients. Still watching things settle.

    I lost 2 sites.

Site 1 - 2 years old - 140 pages of content (about 100 of those pages were deeply spun geo-targeted pages) - ranked primarily with PBN links and a few weaker links.

Went from top 3 for most it's keywords to nowhere to be found.

Site 2 - 1 year old - 40 pages of content (all unique) - ranked primarily with PBN links and a few weaker links.

Went from positions 4-14 to nowhere to be found.

The Twist? Both sites were hacked on the same exact day this update rolled out. As in, on the 17th both sites displayed "this site may be hacked" and they plummeted from the SERPs. I just removed the viagra malware 2 days ago and am waiting for the hack notice to disappear. So I won't know whether this was hack related or penalty related for a week or so.

I also find it ironic that none of my other sites were touched. I have 1 filthy, spam whore of a local site with nothing but shitty GSA links. The sites about 14 months old and this update didn't do a thing to it. It's also a thin site, like 8 pages and I have no idea how it's made it this long.

Then I have another more whitehat site. Better PBN links, cleanest link profile of all my sites. It does use a lot of spun content on the geo pages but the content is spun so well (40+ hours just to do the spintax) it's impossible to tell. This site was penalized back in Sept 013, I believe for overoptimization and after this update it jumped up for a few of its keywords. So I will focus more on that site.

The problem is with this update and the last pigeon update that removed 90% of my 7 packs, I really need to start scaling / spamming / ranking new sites cause traffic isn't cutting it right now.

If your sites were hacked, it means that your sites are truly powerful and you need to fix some security issues.

I've hacked sites for backlinks and usually it's the same security hole here and there.

Wordpress is one of the targets, just change to html/php. I did it and my sites load blazing fast and rank in top 3 with no problem at all ;)

Interesting, never though about it that way.

As far as changing from WP to html/php I wish I could but I have no idea how to code. I know I can pay someone to do the conversion but then anytime I want to make a change to the site I'm either gonna have to pay someone or learn coding myself.

Wordpress gives me a certain level of autonomy and control but like you said it definitely comes with it's risks!
