Yes i got hit, actually got hit on several sites, not all though. Some only took minor dips, others wiped out completely. For the last two months done nothing but content marketing. Building infographics, writing articles, making videos, then sharing the content. Did some guest posting as well. Haven't submitted to a directory in forever, haven't commented on a blog in forever, haven't made a bookmark in forever, haven't published in an article directory in forever.

However, those are all things we did months ago. The odd part is we had done that on all of our sites, but only some of them got hit. Others moved up, and dramatically. We had a site get nailed by Panda in the October update. Shot back up in this latest update.

Totally inexplicable. But it isn't just my keywords or anything. No matter what you search on Google you find crap now. Their search results in general got much worse. Not sure what mistake was made but I have to believe it was a mistake. People as smart as Googlers don't intentionally ruin their own search results with spam when the goal was to eliminate spam.

This is all I have to say- old SEO is dead. No such thing as link building any more. You have to do link earning. If you make a link or are responsible for a link being placed, it basically won't help anymore, in fact, it seems it will hurt you. Don't comment on a blog no matter how legitimately you do it. Don't save a bookmark to your site. Don't publish to any article directories. Don't submit to any directories. In fact, the only thing left to do is hope others link to you. Think Google created an even bigger market for paid links? Yup, they sure did.

Also, hostile SEO is going to work really, really well so look into that. Basically make the most garbage junk you possible can and turn it into link farms. Pile spammy link on top of spammy link at your competitors and bring them down. Going to be a very worthwhile strategy moving forward.

I agree with this. the more you build link specially the unnatural way like doing submissions or blog commenting, it won't help but hurt your site more.

Reverting back to Link Exchange? BS

The whole point of link building is to make it seem natural, and as long as you find a way to do that, and think a bit outside of that thing we call a circle you should be ok.

@ibme Sadly we don't really have a choice since as long as people continue to use Google we cant really move.

I still hope they realize they fucked up and will revert it or provide an alternative algo to fix it. If not - no, they have to fix it as I don't believe they would piss on their own shoes

If that statement is true or valid does that mean that we can now destroy our competition by doing link building??

Great points. The question is what does the Algo look for in a link :)

SEO is not dead. You just have to change the way you do it.

Non of my NON SEOed sites are ranking or bringing any traffic. The anchor text or link types may change, but link building stays. Also, keep in mind that even if your site may be nowhere today, it can reappear in 3-6 months, possibly in even a better position. Google basically delivers more & more traffic to billion dollar companies & kills everything else, that has been their trajectory for some time now.
I say to website owners all the time, use search engines to get your site noticed, but have an exit strategy at least at some point. You can't just sit & hope search engines will keep your business operating forever. If you are just another eCommerece website with nothing separating you from thousands of other eCommerece sites, you will be crushed some day either by search engines or by a large company that will sell the same thing cheaper & you won't be able to compete. Sadly, most never listen & lose the bread on their table one day all at once.

Yup. You see SEO is like sex with your wife. The longer you married the more creative you need to get or it just goes 'down'.

I got hit in this update too. But I don't think it was a mistake by big G. Previously search results were great and when I searched I invariably clicked on an organic link. For the last few days, when I search for something, organic results are so crap that I almost always have to click on an adwords ad to get the info I want.
Result = more searchers clicking adwords ads. thats exactly what big G wants.

Possibly. Also figure those that were on top that made big $ and are now getting zero visits are kinda forced to go ppc to continue their business.

Listen check your links, you might have some on sites that are NOW blacklisted with Google, and remove them and Ny other duplicate content you got out there.

Yeah, no link building, just add content day in and day out - 10 years from now, you will be making 33c per day with Adsense, how awesome is that? The dust will settle and people will go back to employing whatever SEO tactics work...
