Seo Guru Danny Sullivan says he has authority and he's better than you. In his latest post (http://searchengineland.com/penguin-update-recovery-tips-advice-119650) on negative SEO he says:

"For most sites, it?s not a problem because good sites have enough good signals in their favor that bad ones stand out as an oddity. It?s more a liability for smaller sites that haven?t built my authority, in my view."

Notice, the slip of the tongue with the word "my" preceding the word "authority".

Lost all respect for the guy after I read that.

Searchengineland is authority as fuck and Danny Sullivan is a legend in SEO. If there's an authority site in the SEO space, it's that one. He was dropping knowledge on Webmasterworld ten years ago, when that was the main place to discuss SEO and there were 100 page threads for every G update. Also, I suspect that Mr Sullivan's stuff would be given a handjob rather quickly if he noticed any funny stuff going on.

I agree with his sentiments about vulnerability to negative SEO - the shittier your site is, the more vulnerable you are.

To be fair, I found some of the comments more "balanced" and informative than the article itself. You have to admit, that particular article was very pro Google. Here is one comment I found interesting:

Granted, its still early days but I think this statement holds a lot of weight:

That does seem to be a very important point in all this. Should spam links and spun content simply not be rewarded, or actually punished?

You all are missing the point. This thread isn't about the article itself. Its about the statement he made.

"It's more a liability for smaller sites that haven't built authority, in my view." is different than what he penned:

"It's more a liability for smaller sites that haven't built **MY** authority, in my view."

Like I said, I respected this guy throughout the years. But after I saw this, he pretty much let whatever success he has obtained go to his head.

Why is it bad if he admits that his website has authority?

I don't know the exact ownership of searchengineland, but I believe it is his site/biz so for him to use the word "my" when referring to authority, it isn't that far off base...

I really don't see the problem with himself calling his website as authority.

If you think he was calling himself an authority, he wasn't, even though he is.

IT'S NOT BRAGGING WHEN YOU CAN BACK IT UP!

You are entitled to your own opinion, of course, but I think you have a warped view of this.

I can understand if you dislike people who flaunt their success or wealth and just shove it in people's faces, but that's not what's happening here. The guy DOES have authority and he earned it. You don't have to like him or agree with his views, etc... But if you're serious about this business (even on just a limited part time basis) you have to be smart enough to give credit where credit is due.

I don't read his stuff and have no desire to. But to me it's the equivalent of criticizing someone like Peyton Manning because he says he has the skills to go win a superbowl this year in Denver. Ummm....Yeah that's bragging a bit, but it's also TRUE.

Moral of the story is don't be so afraid of success and the glory that can come from it. If someone earns it, they deserve it.
