    Hello everybody,

I'm thinking of starting a (fake) news website, but I'm seeing some people saying that starting a (fake) news website comes with "dangers", like prosecution... So this has scared me off a bit. But I'm wondering if this itself is fake news, or are there truely dangers to running such websites?

Running a real news site comes with the same dangers.

By fake news, do you solely mean mean click bait headlines and then drive traffic to site and cash off on adsense and shit?

I do not use adsense for that but I do have titles that are edgy and articles that back up the titles.

Don't use Adsense on that kind of website. That is all you need to worry about.

There are plenty of people who have made a lot of money on fake news sites with Adsense. I haven't read many stories about people that have been banned for it.

I know several fake news websites being online for several years now and they have not had any issues at all. They also use adsense, it is perfectly fine. As long as you do not accuse someone for crimes they did not commit or publish comments they never did you are absolutely safe. Those fake sites I know, publish fake news but let the visitors know about it... not by claiming it but by using a lot of humor and/or reproduce some news with a bit of exaggeration.

    Example:
In a lightly snowy day they published something like "100 meters tall snowball run across the city and killed 3 pigeons while 10 more were injured. FBI arrived soon after the accident happened. Detective John Doe told the local news he will do anything in his power so those pigeons find justice even now that they are dead. Authorities captured all the city's pigeons for their own safety and they will be released as soon as the snow melts."

Fake news does not seem to be covered by Adsense's policies at the moment - https://support.google.com/adsense/answer/1348688

However, this could quickly change and I would be surprised if it didn't at some point. There has been a lot of media coverage about 'fake news' and its impact.

Short answer is yes, some people believe complete nonsense.

I guess the real traffic from 'fake news' must come from semi-believable stories about a topical subject.

    I will try to explain.

You are not talking about fake news, you are referring to comedy or satirical website. Fake News is exactly (but not limited to) what you just said should not be done, and that is telling lies about political figures or subjects, placing accusations where they shouldn't be. Etc...

They actually quite specifically say it is forbidden under: Misrepresentative content

That is true. I also see a lot of websites that use Adsense popup that obstruct entire webpage content unless you click on it. Forbidden, but still some people think they can get away with it.

I don't believe the definition of misrepresentation they give is specific or covers fake news though:

All media outlets are guilty of fake news at some point, the question is whether it's deliberate or not.

I agree. But will you place your Adsense account in danger based on potentialy wrong interpretation of their rules? Because, when and if it gets banned, there are no backsies.
