If I am trying to optimize my website for a certain keyword and the search results have 1-3 adwords results at the very top (not the right), what is the percentage of clicks the ads get vs the organic results? I know the normal ratio is about 40% for the top organic result and 12% for the 2nd (% being how many people who searched clicking through to the website. I've looked around and have only found information about ads in the sidebar, not the top. Also, does google only put ads on the top if its a combination of non-optimized organic results and great quality ads for the respective keyword. Or can any ad that is strong enough be on the top, even if there are organic websites optimized for those keywords? I have a couple websites I would like to pursue but if the top spot in google is effectively not attainable because of ads I will probably look elsewhere. I'm looking for something similar to the breakdown of ctr of normal search results, but including ads on the top.

    ex
    1. 42%
    2. 12%
    3. 8%

seems pretty important for keyword research, especially for those that have 3 sponsored results at the top.

I can tell you that for a very high traffic popular niche the organic traffic gets 70% of clicks. Users simply trust the SEO results a lot more. Organic sites definitely get the most traffic.

There are cases where you can get a ton of traffic to adwords ads.

But still for best results and most visitors I would suggest organic rankings.

I've seen those 70%+ stats before, but I am not sure if they include sponsored results on top or just ones in the sidebar. I certainly hope so. I'm sure how much the optimization of the adwords ad matters either (if the all the keywords are in the title).

This applies to anyone doing serious keyword research as more and more sponsored results are appearing at the top of the search results. If you are expecting 40% of the search traffic when you decide to go after a keyword it would make a huge difference if the sponsored links took a significant part of that. Someone has to have some more info. I've heard a lot about ad blindness and I think it mitigates part of the problem, but those people who aren't ad blind are also the most likely to click on our adsense ads or cpa offers.
