I'm an 18 year old working on a finance degree. I'm from the US, but I've moved to Europe to study for cheap tuition and adventure. I'm on campus for at most 2 hours a day. The course load is really light, so I just study for exams a few days before and do fine. That leaves me with a whole lot of time to do whatever the hell I want.

I've started an online business before; I did $500 a day, but it rode on the back of a trend which has since died. I've started 5 or 6 ventures since, but all have largely failed.

Well I wanted to rethink the entire process and try something new. As an American living in Europe, what do you think of this plan?

    1. Take trains around Northern Italy, travel around, get into crazy situations just for the hell of it, meet cool people, have fun experiences. Film said experiences and make YouTube videos.
    2. Slowly but surely build up an audience for said videos. Start testing the market with affiliates / my own products geared towards my demographic.
    3. Profit.

If anyone has ever tried starting a legit YouTube channel, let me know how it went. I'd love any tips or suggestions before I embark on this journey.

If you have an entertaining personality it could work out.

I wouldn't bank on it tho.

It comes down to a few things. Can you edit film, have access to a good camera, and be consistent? Your audience will expect regular content. You have to find either a unique selling point or be willing to invest in promotion. At some point you'll need both. The way you grow organically will be dependent on maintaing a social prescence on as many platforms as possible and connecting with people who have similir interests, both influencers and audience wise.

iv been traveling around europe non stop while building an IM career, since i was 18... 4 years ago.. chose this over college and was definitely a great decision..

i would not rely on that youtube idea to make a living while traveling, travel vloging is so much more saturated since casey neistat.

If travelling the world made people money, every fucker would be doing it...

While you can probably make some money off the back of it, don't plan for this to support you while you do your thing. You need the money before you do it or you will end up stranded in some weird Asian town forced to sell your body to get enough to get your self home... and with it being Asia they have very little money, you will probably spend more on mouth wash than you will earn from your little adventure

Well from the looks of it this plan is probably going to be scrapped. Is there any way to do a little proof of concept? It seems like if it would eventually work, I wouldn't know for possibly several months.

I would keep it as a pet project but focus on something definitely reliable as you build it. That way you can live comfortably, make money, and gradually invest in it and grow.

It's a nice idea OP but as with every new risk you take in business, make sure you have a backup plan. A monetary buffer or a ticket back home, "just in case".

Thanks for all the replies guys. Do you think I'd be better off just "keep on keeping on" trying to make money with online businesses (through methods suggested on this forum, for example)? I have 3 years before I graduate, and I want to be sure I can live comfortable working for myself by that time.

Just travel around locally first and make videos and blog about it, and then if you see it going well start going on longer trips.

No, no, fuck no, no. NO.

You've literally failed over half a dozen times. So now instead of putting more elbow grease and effort into it, you think you can MAKE BANK FUCKING AROUND WHILE TRAVELING AND FILMING IT?

The only market I can think of that's more saturated with morons and assholes and wannabes than YouTube is goddamn law school. And at least they've got something to show for it.

Sounds like you could benefit a lot more than you realize from a solid education...

I need to shake things up and try something completely different, that I can tell. I was simply asking for a critique of the plan before I execute. There's no way I'll let myself work for a bank, because by the time I graduate I'll be more than well off working for myself.

So why did you choose a finance degree if you don't want a really nice bank job?

Knowledge and effort makes money, not fooling around as a digital nomad. Why? Because its reliable, thats why. Being a joker is risky shit.
Your univ doesn't sound promising either, easy program probably means low quality.
Fun, crazy, adventure these words are obsessing you. Even entertaining niches, are filled with cold calculations and plans behind scenes. If you think spontaneous is way to go , you are wrong!

It's supposedly ranked among the highest in Europe. I'm only coasting by because as a freshman I'm taking pretty easy and straightforward courses. I'm sure next semester will demand more time. I'm not trying to graduate top of my class either. I use the Pareto Principle, which means studying 40 minutes or so a day per subject, getting my attendance when necessary, and pulling a few all-nighters before exams.

Thank you very much for the feedback about the plan. You're right, persistence and cold calculation is the backbone of any business. I have therefore adjusted my sails. Here's what I'll do...

    • I'll use a list of customers from my old business to market some affiliate products
    • I'll start a new business with my old business partner; our deal is and always was that I do the grunt work and he leverages his networks to bring traffic
    • I'll start a philosophy / self-improvement blog which I will promote with some influence I have in a couple related forums
    • I'll make videos / posts / content about books / entrepreneurship / fitness / philosophy
    • I'll travel every weekend and create well-produced videos edited for the masses and entertaining. I will get myself into dramatic for the entertainment value.
    • I'll go from niche to niche testing the market. This will be monitored by a sign on my wall with the current niche; I cannot change the sign to start testing a new market until current efforts have been exhausted.
I really don't care about going out or chasing women anymore (boy have I wasted a lot of time and money doing that!), so I will put in the sweat and elbow grease to make something of myself. Thank you very much for everyone's replies in this thread. Helpful people on the internet like you guys have changed my life several times already, and I'm not exaggerating. I'll be sure to give back to the community when I have wisdom to share down the road.

Congratz! You will have an unlimited future! I know two guys like moving themselves.
------A French writer spent ten years collecting Che's materials. Che was very crazy. He started from home wandered in the South America finally he arrived Miami and flied to Argentina from there.
------https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xu_Xiake of the Ming Dynasty. had no bureaucratic airs. He traveled so many roads, found that Jinsha River is the source of the Yangtze River. Ancient religious book/texts (<<Shui Jing Zhu>> (Commentary on the Waterways Classic), by LI Dao-yuan) hold that "Minshan Mountain is the source"; he said that's wrong, instead "the source is Jinsha River"; In the mean time, the author of <<Shui Jing Zhu>> is also a terrific guy. If he not ventured here there everywhere how could he wrote so well? I have the interest imitating Xu Xiake, he's only purpose was walk/traveling, he spent whole life traveling.
