I downloaded a really nice free theme and it includes 4 links, 2 of which are cellphone related, 1 game related, and the one that worries me: a health site. Will this hurt my rankings? Is there anything I can add before and after the links like a 'nofollow' so google doesn't pick up the links?

Just edit the footer and remove the links.

Internal links only can hurt,if you are linking to a bad neighborhood like deinxeded sites etc.

I would but the author embedded some kind of function that disables the site when you delete the links in the footer.

If I were you I would look for another free theme. There are enough of them out there.
Why stick with this one and have a bad feeling about it?

There is an easy way around that.. instead of deleting the footer link, simply change it to some internal link in your site.

I have come across a few themes like this that make it difficult to edit where if you just delete out the code suddenly everything dies. By leaving in the code but making the echo link data nothing, or something else, you can get by.

what's the link to the theme? The author probably just put a little function in the functions.php file to test and see if the links were there. A little bit of editing and I'm sure it would work fine without the links.
