It was a lot more then just a drug trafficking place....The owner of silk road was insanely smart, but he was 'apparently' involved with a homicide which seems believable, considering it's the dark web.

Really? Then you weren't paying to close attention to the news. They had a mountain of evidence ranging from records of him posting his personal email from an account he also used to talk about the silk road. This I might add was one of the first ever records on the internet of anyone talking about the silk road. This email by the way had his whole name in it ([email protected]). They also caught him with his computer on, fully decrypted. Meaning they got all of his VERY VERY VERY DETAILED RECORDS that he kept about his actions running the site.

I'll give him one though he definitely didn't admit defeat. Even with all this against him he still went to trial instead of accepting a plea deal (if one was even offered... i mean this was pretty in the bag for the prosecution).

but his defense was that he was the victim of some conspiracy involving the owner of mtgox... so.... ya....

actually he wasn't charged of the murder plot thing. Though the procecution did get to bring it up during the trial.

I was expecting a Nobel Prize to be given to him for his humanitarian services.

It turns out the hit man and murder crap was made up by the D.E.A apparently, seen it on reddit somewhere. Anyhow, I think this is a sad day. Sure, he starting a place where people could sell drugs but so what. He never forced anyone to buy drugs, They say he was linked to an over dose in Australia... bullshit. The buyers and drug takers are responsible for their own actions. If I took a nice big hit of coke then died, it's my own stupid fault know one else's.

A german drug dealer from the silk road who got caught with millions of $$$ and kilos of MDMA gets 7 years... Ross gets 2 life sentences, something is wrong there. Ross was an entrepreneur like many of us. Although it was illegal I don't think he deserves life is prison, waste of a good person... dumb f*ck for getting caught the way he did but still a good person.

So many more sites like that have popped up in the last two years since SR went down. They're never going to be able to stop it. How long do you think it took them to take one down.

I really do hope 1 of those death contracts is on Judge Forrest and that it's successfully carried out after his sentence. And fuck those 6 parents claiming their children died cause of Silk Road. That shit makes my blood boil.

Drug addicts are drug addicts. Those kids would have found their drugs anywhere else online. And they'd still be dead cause they were dumbasses. I'm not saying drug addicts are dumb I'm saying people who OD are most definitely not smart. And neither are the parents trying to cast blame on the suppliers/owner rather than their dumbass children.

This war on drugs will go down in history as the dumbest fucking feat man every attempted.

If you go on youtube you can find lots of videos of cops being killed from tv shows like "Worlds Most Shocking XXXXX".

I can't recall how many times I've seen a cop pull over 2-3 Hispanics in some dilapidated toyota corolla, smelled weed, asked them to open the trunk..... dudes in the car get nervous as fuck.... cop gets nervous as fuck...... then they team up and kill the cop or the cop kills them.

When you watch these things from an objective stand point you realize that humans are really no smarter than monkeys. What we call "intelligence" is just as big a disadvantage as it is an advantage.

You'd never see apes pulling over apes because a plant then killing each other. But humans? No problem.

People keep going to jail for drugs while prisons and big pharma keep getting rich, lobbying for more drug laws... the cycle never fucking ends.

It's still illegal to smoke weed in many states but you can go online and legally import afgan opium poppy pods or seeds under the guise you'll be using them for floral arrangements or cooking. Back in 2006-2008 when people were being arrested for little dime bags of weed..... thousands of people were ORDERING OPIUM RIGHT ON EBAY. People are STILL being arrested for weed and you can legally go online in 2015, order a 50lb bag of opium laced poppy seeds and kill yourself in less than 60 mins.

    WHAT SENSE does this make?

You can get arrested for ordering marijuana seeds and serve a lot more time for planting them. But you can walk into any bakery stacked with a warehouse full of opium poppy seeds, casually buy 5lbs OTC and nobody will ask a question. Then you can go home, make opium tea laced with morphine and you can also plant them right in your front yard.

It's technically illegal to steep the tea and drink it, but there's absolutely no problem with driving around with a trunk full of poppy seeds.

This is the world we live in. Judges wanna talk about the "social fabric" of our society? Back when I was on parole and working at Petsmart I became friends with a young puertorican manager who's father owned a small 8 acre farm. And I talked to him about the poppy loophole for about 2-3 months straight before he finally read about it online. Spring time was coming, I was putting pressure on him and trying to explain it was completely legal and that we could make a lot of $$$.

One day he came into work happy as hell shouting I was a genius. "OMG dude! I thought you were full of shit, I read about all this online, I even told my DAD about it, he's familiar with the loophole and we can use his land". I asked, "how much land can we use" and he said 1/4 acre.

Long story short I was on parole at the time. But me and this kid spent 2 weeks plowing a small part of his dads farm to plant tazmanian poppys. They're a bit less noticeable than afgan but just as strong. We wound up barely using 1/8 of an acre cause we ran out of seed. But at the end of the season we harvested all the pods, tied them, hung them upside down to dry and waited a couple months. We get the pods on ebay selling them for "floral arrangements" KNOWING that 90% of our buyers would be drug addicts. But as long as you don't mention a word about that you're fine. In 6 months we cleared $120k. I kept $40k for myself and him and his dad got the rest.

It was sooooo fucking easy to grow that shit cause poppies grow like weeds. So naturally we start talking about doing a full 1/2 acre for the next season. Then out of nowhere all this poppy hysteria goes political, ebay becomes the forefront, it hits the news and the DEA gets involved. They start burning down perfectly legitimate poppy farms without arresting anyone. That's when I realized what a joke our drug laws are. If you owned a big farm and seemed legitimate, they wouldn't touch your farm. If you were a small farm owner, not so well known in your community, they could illegally torch your farm without any reasonable cause. Their ONLY reasonable cause was the MEDIA saying, "kids are using these to get high". But no new laws were made and the poppy protection act still exists.

I've honestly thought about getting back into the poppy business since it's been 5+ years since I've heard any politics. All you need is 1 acre, a website, 1 anon post on a poppy forum like opiophile or bluelight, and you could make a lot of money. You do have to be careful due to how the laws are written. And I'm not suggesting anyone actually does it. But if you're a smart fucker with access to land..... ideally tucked away from prying eyes.... you could easily retire within 5 years.

Or a safer way (reviews, home delivery instead of meeting weird guys in a dark alley...)
As you say yourself - these idiots get their weekly dosage anyway.
Read BreaknBrix comment - I don't feel like justifying myself anymore - doesn't change anyone mind anyway ;)

:tinfoil3::tinfoil3::tinfoil3:My personal conspiracy theory is this:tinfoil3::tinfoil3::tinfoil3:

The judge doesn't care for the crime but for the 187M$$$$. In order to achieve that, he needed to eliminate the SR owner and transfer the monies to his own personal fund through secret accounts, lobbying, bribes of power (the usual stuff)
    OR
The boring one where rich kids parents blame the website owner and bribed the judge to make him guilty so that they can't blame on where did kid get the money to buy the drugs or why is their child on drugs in the first place.

:bandit:Lesson: If your going to go into drugs, invest in a cartel so you can kill and threaten the families who snitched and oppose you (This includes police and the judicial system)

To those who are very serious the statement above is a :joke:

insanely smart guys don't get caught, especially not with making amateur mistakes which lead to his capture, you'll never find headlines of the truly smart guys anywhere, why? because they don't get caught, which is close to impossible in this line of business, at least when you grow big enough

let's just say, he has skills and more than likely smarter than average to be able to build and manage something like this for relatively long, but if he didn't see this coming, he was naive or suffered from god syndrome

it doesn't even matter what anyone's viewpoint on drugs and debating whether he was a hero or not, until drugs/running a marketplace for drug deals are against the law, they're against the law and you will go to prison for it, if you get caught

i'd go even further: how stupid you need to be to live (habitually) in the US to operate something like this? move to a country which doesn't give two fucks about the US and its authorities, have lenient drug laws and live a long and prosperous life w/o ever going back to the US or to any country where you can get arrested and extradited to the US, this should be the very first thing which is taken care of
all i can see besides him making mistakes, that he didn't utilize one of the biggest advantages of the internet: the ability to be able to operate from any place on the world with an internet connection

but yea, the tenure of his sentence is an overkill for sure
