    Hi guys,

How can a news website/blog generate income? Usually, news sites get content from other sites and they may have some unique content. However, I have read that spinning content, autoblogging, etc can be bad though. Sites like Huffington Post definitely generate income, but I would really like to know how they started and what they did to become successful. Reason why I ask is because I also want to create a news site (like Huffington Post), but my target audience would be more niche, yet large enough enough to have various sections/columns. Any insight to this is greatly appreciated. I have searched, but it doesn't seem like a model that many people have pursued.

Huffington Post started as a paper..

Anyways you could always use AdSense since there is a lot of content involved

Huffington Post got multiple millions in backing from GE/Universal. Without that capitalization, I doubt your site can do as well.

Yes HuffPo had some serious backers along with two guys that had done this format before so she was off and running rather easily. Many many people are trying this same thing thinking it's easy, but it can be done....just expect to put some serious work into it along with needing to have a team to help. If you're looking for an easy route, this is definitely not the one to go.

Definitely not looking for the "easy" route. I just think the business model is ideal to emulate. I would like to tweak it if I found things that are better. I just wish I knew more on how to properly set something like this up using wordpress. Appreciate the feedback so far. I understand it takes alot of work to be successful at this, but am willing to give it a go.

For the professionals out there, I would love to hear some suggestions on how to properly set something like this up. You guys say you need $$$ to fund something like this. Okay, so where would the monies go toward? I would appreciate it if anybody could be specific and elaborate on the set-up. Any help/info is appreciated. I just want to do my homework and you guys are the best of the best when it comes to this type of stuffs. Cheers to you guys.

You will need to post unique content equal to a newspaper on a daily basis. Therefore we are looking at-least 15-20 columns on different subjects with content being posted every day. In additional to this you will need posts from different authors that contribute to the columns. One more team will be needed to monitor newswires for fresh and interesting content.

Consider this: 25-30 journalists, 3-4 news-wire guys, 7-8 sub-editors, 2-3 main editors, 5-10 proof-readers, 2 content programmers, 2 portal managers, 1 web security guy, 3-4 SEO guys, 3 social media guys to post all these content articles to social properties and engage the audience.

Hence, the main investment is in terms of manpower rather than anything else. The second level being in building credible back links (naturally).

Great input. What I plan on doing is not nearly as broad as Huff Post. It'll be much more niche, but will have enough categories to have columns on. So based on what you guys have said so far, the most important work would be establishing this site to be credible and gaining traffic. Definitely will take time, but that's okay.

Second part of this is how can a news site be monetized? For example, how does Huff Post generate revenue with their site? Is it just ads? Definitely would appreciate any help, ideas, suggestions here. Thanks my black hat friends! You guys are awesome.

You should also consider examining several successful news site business models, instead of just huffpo. Drudge Report is a famous example of a basically one man news site, that makes money through exclusive premium ads (i.e., when it posts an ad, it's the only one on the site).

Appreciate the replies guys. Again, I don't want to be another news site like Huffpost. I just want to create a news site for a very niche market: BE THE huffpost for a niche market. I hope that makes sense.

Right now, I'm just trying to see what ways to monetize this idea looking at the future. I'll definitely won't be undertaking this alone. I'm also not looking to get rich quick, if that's what people are thinking. My priority is to make a successful news site and then go from there.

hey I'm interested in news related stuff, let me know more detail on your niche, i could help you find affordable help, i know some people...

I can also write articles, get youtube involved, and am skilled at niche social media marketing. You're going to need a lot of that in todays current 24/7 news cycle. You will need someone who can make your articles circulate twitter via your niche fanbase, make strong dms, and conversations, and incentive to become a member on your site, create an email list... The more traffic the more money you can make off ads, and there's a good amount of competition out there trying to monetize their own news sites.
