Creating any backlinks = black hat. White hat = links come naturally.

If what you're trying to ask is, if profile links are Blackhat? Well YES!

But a better question would be whether they are Good for SEO?

Answer: It depends. When creating profiles take as much care into killing footprints as possible. Here's what i mean; user, profile text/content, and index-timing should not do a 'callback' right to you.

Get Usernames as many as possible, if you want to put together a genuine list of usernames, go to fakenamegenerator.com, download a bulk list of just FNames and Last, or just Initials and last names. load them up in a text editor(Notepad ++) and pull all space inbetween the names, and you have a handsome list of Usernames.

For your profile text/message, Google the keyword you intend targeting, copy and paste 3 pages from the Google result(Sites and meta Tags then pull where it shows the URL trailing, you should get loads of themed content that way without breaking a sweat) and make them into the formats that works with the profile builder(Xrumer or any junior ones)

Then never try to get your profile links indexed, let them be found naturally. if it will take weeks let them, if they wont be found at all let them. Do not Ping, dont dress it up as an RSS feed, Don't do nothing. Dont even try to backlink them, profile links mostly get links from the host domain, any thing amiss is a flag. Check out this Post by PHPBuilt if you want to bulk up a profile Page Value Internally.(You'll get an idea of how it works)

Final Notes: Just starting out on backlinking your site don't do profiles, start with bookmarks, not your digg.com, and mister wong bookmark. I mean something with a lot of volume. Check this guys out Crork.com. They also have a thread here.(When setting up your site for bookmarking, get a lot of titles and descriptions and if you email your job directly they take more than 150 characters for the job.)

    Cheers Bro.

It depends on what tool you using. If you building backlinks manually, it is not blackhat at all. It's the natural process and doesn't matter if the link is created by you or some random guy.

Even manual link building is technically black hat because you are doing it with the intent of manipulating the search results (Google perspective).
