If i were to create websites as a service, I could add do follow links from each website to mine.
Do people often do this?
If so, is it not a problem to have a bunch of links coming from very similar site, which also are probably all on my shared hosting?
What is the common thing people do?

You can put them at the footer with this text "Build by x.com"

But why would they will be on the same shared hosting if those are client's websites?

well i will always use the same hosting platform to create the websites. I do not know how to organize them though. Should i make the client purchuse a hosting plan? if so , is it a problem if they all buy the hosting plan on the same platform?

If they buy the hosting themselves they will get the separate IPs and whois information for their websites.

So the websites you are creating won't be turned into PBNs and getting a link from them won't cause you any SEO issues.

Also, you can send the affiliate link of the hosting to your clients to get the commission.

ok I understand. Maybe I'll try to change the anchor to avoid looking suspicius to google, even though this linking seem organic.
Now that i think about it, since I do not have any clients right now, could it be a good idea to propose to clients to create the website for free? I will then benefit a little for the hosting referral, a little from the backlink (maybe over time it will get some authority) and then i can ask the client if he wants, for a yearly fee, i can maintain the site updated etc...
what do you think about this?

Yes, people often do this. But Google explicitly said these kind of footer credit links should be no follow.

Don´t change the footer links from "Build by x.com" to another anchor text, looks even more suspicious. "Build by x.com" is fine, don´t give you any juice but occasionally some visitors from the sites, I even got clients from links like that on clients websites.

you mean the whole free website + yealy fee thing I proposed?

what if the credit is not in the footer but in the content, for example at the bottom of the about page (in content) or any other indexed page. Maybe not even in every site, just the ones that pick up some authority after some time? Is it too scammy? I mean if I create the site for free..

It would more look like a pbn network that way, specially if you host them on the same ip.

I would not host them on the same IP. I will make every client with their personal shared hosting (but maybe on the same platform). Imagine i put do-follow links on only the 2 or 3 sites that have gained auth after, lets say, 1 year. What will make thsi look like a PBN? What would be the difference between normal and organic linking? Imagine i put the 3 do follow links on the sites in very different ways, for example.
