Ok guys give me your opinion....

let's say I sell dog toys *woof woof* and I own a domain called dogtoys.com (not my domain just an example) the linking is ok say DA40 PA50 not bad linking profile domain is clean. Ranking was always around mid to bottom page for most all of our products.

Now, say we purchased petstuff.com (again not my domain just an example) that was used in the past and has a very strong link profile DA55 PA65 also a very clean relevant link profile with tons of monster back links.

We then created a sub-directory for petstuff.com/dogtoys/ and 301'd our dogtoys domain to the subdirectory all of a sudden ranking went very high in most all areas for every toy we have within a weeks time... so where we ranked a certain toy at the bottom of page 1 with just dogtoys we now rank #2 or #3 for pretty much all results.

After about a week we figure we really want to use our original brand as that is how people really know and trust us as well as a ton of direct traffic and in-place social media so we decide to change direction and forward petstuff to our dogtoys site, now all rankings have dropped even below what they were with dogtoys by itself before all these changes and it has been 2 weeks now with no sign of improvement of at least getting our old rankings back when we were just running the single dogtoys domain.

I am under the impression that after forwarding petstuff to dogtoys our ranking would go to were they where when we had dogtoys forwarded to the subdirectory of petstuff.

    What do you guys think...

With a few more weeks dogtoys should end up as it was when we forwarded dogtoys to petstuff with the high rankings?

With a few more weeks we should see dogtoys go back to where it was before doing anything?

A couple weeks? A month? A few months?... What kind of time frame have you guys seen on this type of deal.?

After a certain period of time should we just bite the bullet and do what worked best thus forwarding our dogtoys domain to the subdirectly of petstuff and it should go back to the way it did when we ran the test?

    What would you do?

I'd wait for a month. Google takes longer to process 301 redirects these days. If your rankings don't return after a month, then it would only make sense to reverse what you did.

That was kind of what I was thinking, just curious what everyone else thought or ran into themselves.
