Do you bother to get your link indexed or it's enough just to let google crawled them by pinging and rss submission. I have like 3 day making rss and pinging all my tier 2 links but none of them get indexed. Does a link need to be indexed to count as a backlink to a site?

Definitely links needed to be indexed to get count as backlink.

    1. If you have unique content and place in authority websites it will get indexed automatically without any external work.
    2. You can do retweet, google+ share, Facebook share to make it index.
    3. You can add social Bookmarking

Few link will get index in 1 day, few in week, few in month, few will never get index based on quality!

Indexed is better as that means Google finds that page your link is on worthy of indexing. Not always possible so as long as its crawled it counts. To get it crawled/indexed just tweet/google + share it.
