    Hey guys,

I recently redesigned my site -- and I'm going to be doing a complete overhaul of the front page and moving the blog page in the next few days.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could give me a 10 second lookover and let me know what you think I need to improve/fix/make better.

Mostly just looking for graphic design/website design changes.

    Thanks!!

Oh yeah -- do you guys think it would matter if I moved the sidebar from the right to the left?

I don't wan't to hurt your feelings but is seems a little plain to me. Too much white, it kinda hurts my eyes. And the text seems like all the lines are double spaced. Just being honest and trying to help

It is what it is.... a blog.

Not a big fan of blogs... but if the content is great how the blog looks like does not really matter.

    I think its fine though.

Too many text on the homepage, make some featured fun images not analytics.

get your sidebar fix with size like 340px.

It's a nice start, but my advice to you is that if your design skills aren't up to par, you may want to invest in a prebuilt theme that looks nicer than the site that you currently have. I think you have good content but it's presented in such a way that makes me not even want to read what you have to say.

I would say go with a theme from Themeforest and pimp that theme out to suit your needs so that it's different from others who bought the same theme as you. I do this all the time and it saves on time and cuts out a lot of the hassle if you know what you're doing.

I took a quick look on Themeforest for you and found these themes that may be what you're looking for in a site.

    http://themeforest.net/item/bloggy-...WT.seg_1=category_thumb&WT.z_author=pixelwars

    http://themeforest.net/item/iwrite-...eg_1=category_thumb&WT.z_author=RubenBristian

    http://themeforest.net/item/bliss-p...T.seg_1=category_thumb&WT.z_author=bluthemes_

I think these 3 examples would suit your content just fine and would be an upgrade over your current site.

I was a bit disoriented. No clear indication what you want the user to do. Read the text perhaps but that black call to action on the right was too distracting without making me want to read it at the same time (double fail).

Really needs more work, it 's a decent start though, seen much worse :)

Fair enough -- I was trying to go for a minimalist design -- and added in the background (the gray) to get rid of some of the white.

OH MAN! I screwed up the CSS.

I just checked the way my site looks on different screen sizes and I didn't have a width/maxwidth setup.

I think that's why it looks bad to a lot of you -- its like reverse responsive and gets bigger as your screen increases... that's not what I wanted.

My bad -- I've been designing the site on a small mac laptop so I never realized the size expands with bigger screens -- I'll fix that.

    Thanks guys,

    Brandon

    EDIT:

Hmm do you mean clear indication from my part? Personally I'm trying to get email opt-in conversions... for the most part, but in reality from the readers point of view, I want them reading the posts.

I'm going to change up that opt-in box ASAP -- I thought it would work awesome because its high contrast -- but maybe that actually takes away from the site?

Hmm -- I need to look into that -- but yeah I actually just fixed the page max-width issue (which was making the size expand wayyy to far on big screens I'm working on a 1280 x 800).

But I'll look into the email forms too -- I guess I need to learn how to make something stand out... without making it look bad.

Is it just the color that's wrong, or is it the shape/size?

Try using different shade of white.

I spent some time looking at it...and I see where you wanted to keep it simple...the main part is clean but the background and the call to action just throw it all off (for me anyway) - I am looking at it on a iMac and it is off to the left with a huge space on the right...makes it very hard to read.

I would work on the layout first and then tackle the design. Take a look at shoemoney (dot) com - his blog is so simple...but it just works. I find myself checking it out every couple days because it is easy to read.

    I think a white/light grey/light blue would work well...

Also...I would get a custom header done - with a character of you if that is what you want - but the generic character that you have now looks too, well...generic. I think a nice custom header that sets your blog apart will do well for you. You can find some really good designers here that will get you set up. It is worth the money to have something professionally done that sets you apart form a theme.

    I would do the following

    -center the top menu
    -center the header image
-add some more color (to each heading tag for example)
    -more bullet points
    -more photos
-create a unique sticky page, don't just use your newest post, instead create a sticky that will funnel traffic into the articles you want them to read most

    hope that helps!

Hey mate -- thanks for taking the time to give it a look. I really appreciate that.

I'll look into the alignment issue. My main problem is that I can never tell how it looks on bigger screens without using those automated online tools to test website responsiveness.

I'll try to get the main page aligned better on bigger screens -- because I guess I just have it aligned correctly for myself right now.

Will also look into the colors/other ideas.

Was your problem with the CTA the black color?

    Thanks!

    EDIT:

jazzc -- thanks a ton! I'll try to incorporate some of those ideas into my site.

I changed the header/navigation to be 100% width, because I thought that was cool/the way website design was going. (You know how all the tech startups these days have 100% width pages, with responsive content? Maybe that's just me being stupid though).

It looks like you made the total width of the content smaller, can I ask why or what proportions you were using for the total width?

change the profile info to look and read more professionally. makes you look like a noob writing "i'm a genius, actually just j/k, and wanting a slice of the pie. "

procrastinator/ money maker (they don't belong on the same page together.)

    Do i care? No.

Would i care if it read that you are an experienced internet marketer who blogs about all the things you learn and how it can help me as a IM, then yes i'm suddenly interested.

and for gawds sake, change your photo to something more credible than a guy on a couch with a hoodie on, looking like he's reaching for another toke of a joint, with eyeballs that are the color of my anus after a hot curry.

get a suit on an stand in front of a skyscraper, something that shows your successful. (you don't have to own that particular skyscraper)

you've got a decent domain name, and if you build it up, looks like it could be good.

    960px is the standard width.

Those full width responsive startup pages serve a different purpose than that of your blog. Not every design fits every goal.

Ahh ok. I did some research and a lot of the most famous blogs are 960px, never realized that.. weird.

I can't change my site to that yet -- need to change a lot of the sidebar graphics first, but I like that idea. I'll have to make my sidebar content more consise -- I'm thinking its way too big now.

    Appreciate the advice.

I think you are spot on for most of it.

Originally I went with the joking/humorous picture and bio information because I thought it added to the brand. You know like "lifestyle brands" where people buy things from a company because they agree/like their 'story,' I thought that could be my branding.

But I'm guessing a more professional tone would work better with more serious people?

Panther28 hit the nail on the head. You have a very good domain that has endless potential. That is a great name. Take full advantage and run with it!

It looks nice now, maybe just add a feature section and put your opt-in in some kind of box.

Definitely shouldnt have blog on homepage in my opinion, change hover effect on links in the footer, you cant see what it says when you hover over them, and do something with the header, it looks lonely.
