I have been reading this forum for countless hours and have learned quite a bit from the members here. I actually made one autoblog, made some money with it, then sold it.
This is my second blog and I still really dont know what I am doing.
After I am indexed I plan on inserting adsense.

Just looking for some general advice and criticism on my layout, S.E.O., ect.

    Be gentle!

    thetophomebasedbusinesses.com

Someday when I actually have some knowledge to share I hope to be able to add to this forum.

I'd start by fixing the 47 html errors on the site. (makes a difference in your rankings)

I had a bunch and moved me a few spots up after I fixed them all.
Took me an hour, well worth it.

I obviously am not going to ask you to help me fix them or anything but could you point me in the right direction? I had no idea there were even errors. How do I check for them?
Ill figure out how to fix them.....

No worries bro, I couldn't build a (decent) webpage to save my life, and I managed it without too much trouble.

They point out each place the error is, and even tell you why it's an error. LOL

    url is:

    Code:
    http://validator.w3.org

And sorry, I should have included that with my recommendation.

I figure you'll probably be getting a few ideas from the others on here, and it will keep you busy, but I'll take a deeper look if you like.

    @Craig

just a couple of tips for you.

Pick up a handful of .edu and .gov backlinks

You can find some on BHW here, or I can shoot you some in a PM if you need.

I'd use no more than 5 or 6 a month (looks more natural this way) even if you can get hundreds.

I used website grader to do an analysis and you scored 55/100 (not good) to give you an example my 3 month old site (which I work my ass of with though) is 99.5/100

Don't get discouraged sometimes it's just a matter of finding out what you need to tweak then doing the work.

Google doesn't appear to have indexed your pages yet.
(I can help you if you need)

If you have a twitter acct, associate it with the site.

Backlinks.... well you have 2 from ask. lol

    better work on this. :)

Don't focus on quantity with this site, build a few decent backlinks from relevant site, get indexed, fix your errors and do some seo and it will start moving before you know it.

OK, this thing is just silly. Enter Amazon.com and it tells you the index page has 1183 errors...c'mon.

    Indexed pages for Amazon

    Google: 261,000,000
    alta vista: 390,000,000
    Alltheweb: 341,000,000

You really think 1183 errors is alot? LOL :)

1183 doesn't seem much for a big site like AMAZON. Just tried on one of my new sites and it returned just 5 errors. I wouldn't overlook that tho considering it is a one page site.

If I remember right, when I checked my site I was ranking at 23 for my main keyword, and had something like 27 errors and 2 warnings. I managed to fix all the errors, and one of the warnings, and moved up in rankings to 23

It's possible it was unrelated, but the timing sure seemed right.

Not sure if you'd notice anything with only 5 errors, but let us know if you happen to move up a spot or anything. ;)

What? You think I ran it for the entire site in 12 seconds? I just did the index page fa crissakes.

    Again...run this: mozilla.org = 164 errors.

Like I said, this tool is silly.

Thanks alot for your tips. Ill get working on the errors today. I just built the site two days ago with wordpress, and havent had time to try to get backlinks but I will do that today.
I do have the site autoposting to twitter when its updated with a shortened link back to my site.
As for indexing, I have a sitemap sent to google whenever the site is updated, and I also used a tool on here that is supposed to help you get indexed quickly.

With the edu, and gov backlinks how does that work? Do I just pay someone to make me some backlinks on edu and gov sites?

    Thanks again for your time.

I know lol. I really have to quit reading and take action. My problem is I try to do things as perfect as I can but there is too much information out there to do so!
