Hey everyone, long time lurker and first time poster. I'm trying to get started on a site but I'm confused as to how I should go about analyzing my competition in the following niche scenario:

Let's say I wanted to enter the "German Drinks" niche. A lot of the top results are from high authority sites like yummly, or other high authority food sites. However, the subdomains do not have high page ranks or backlinks at all (eg. domainnamedotcom/german-drinks). Would it be virtually impossible to outrank yummly, assuming I wanted to become the number one authority site of "German Drinks" (because the root domain is so powerful)? Or is it possible since the subdomain page rank and page authority is virtually non-existent?

Thank you, and let me know if I can clear this question up at all.

Pages are easy to outrank, even if it's Wikipedia. Homepages are much harder to beat.

And btw, your example domainnamedotcom/german-drinks would not be a subdomain, it's a page. A subdomain would be germandrink.domainnamedotcom.

Start to dominate long-tails keywords such as : cheap german drinks in new york, buy german drinks in chicago, get german drinks, etc.
These long-tails are often buyers keyword which could leads in a lot of sales rather than only owning 1st page for keyword 'german drinks' only.

Yup.. That's true. I have seen lot of authority pages being out ranked, even if its for a short period of time.

Thanks for the clarification on the page/subdomain. See, I have always been confused as to what to focus on. Apparently it the page alone as opposed to the home domain. Thank you.

By links I'm assuming you mean backlinks as opposed to the site structure (interlinking of pages)?

    Thanks for your response.

    Cheers all.

In order to dominate long tail keywords, would I simply include the specific long tail text in my page articles? Or would I make titles or meta tags? How does one go about targeting a long tail keyword? Sorry for the noob question. I have read a lot - I haven't quite seen a specific answer to this.
