I live in a tiny farm town with a lot of small businesses. These business have horribly designed sites that are barely functional. Would it be a waste of time to email the owners and offer to redesign their site, then do it in wordpress or something? For instance, there's a lot of small pizza shops with 2-3 page sites with very little content, horrible colors and outdated designs. Been thinking about this but there's one thing holding me back. I'm still learning and I'm not good at graphics, but I know my way around wordpress pretty good:) Could always find free themes and change them little lol

Of course this could work.. it's a numbers game, the more people you contact the better.

Just work on your sales pitch.

Also, you don't need to know any design or graphics either as you could just outsource the whole thing.

I do this to some local businesses and one quite large business. I also have recurring charges of $50 to 'upkeep'.

And I also suggest them to buy hosting through my affiliate link. ;)

sure it will work, but i suggest you to do this, pick 1 business redo there site without them even knowing once u have it finished and looking good, Then call them with a sales pitch.

Something like this, "Hey Tom hows it going, I'm a local web developer and took the liberty into redoing your website with a up to date template and some nice web 2.0 graphics I was just contacting you to see if it appeals to you and your business u can check it out at http://mysite.com maybe we can set up a meeting and talk about implementing this website on your domain.

    Then Hang up

This little pitch says a few things, HEY! your website looks like Shit! u need serious help dude in a nice manner, also it says I know your a cheap bastard so i did the work already instead of me trying to persuade u I can make u look good and last but not least. I'm busy call me when u get the time, you don't wanna seem like some bum desperate for work.

If your version of the website looks way better then there's trust me they will call u. After you get maybe 5 business owners locally. you don't have to do the sites first at all u can do it once u get paid, because your resume will speak for itself.

for the love of god don't hang up on them. if you're a small business owner chances are you are busy as hell, and 4 seconds after you made that phone call to me and hung up I'd have forgotten the URL or what you were pushing.

get them to give you an email address to contact them, or a fax number to fax over the URL and a short pitch about what you can do for them so they have something tangible to remember you by.

Also, don't push hosting aff links. Get a reseller account (where ever) and charge them a monthly fee. Not only will you get recurring income, but you'll control the server and all of their site, so if they decide they want to move away from you they'll have to give you a call first to cancel, so you can re-sell them on why you are better and keep them around for longer.
