Considering purchase of a SEO-business, but there is a duplicate of it - big problem?

I'm a beginner with online business and had some success with a seasonal website I developed but I'm now looking for a real project to spend more time on and make more profit.

I'm considering the purchase of a website that provides a full range of outsourced SEO-services and earns around 2k per month according to the owner.

I recently found there is another website with exactly the same content and desiggn (except for some colours and other minor differences). Both sites are relatively new, but the one for saale was made 2 months before the copycat one. I asked the seller about this and he claimed that he did not know about the site and that someone has plagiarised his site. He claims that the success relies in his branding and customer satisfaction, which cannot be replicated.

The copycat site actually ranks 3rd on Gooogle for it's own site name, while the one for saale only ranks on the second page when searching the exact site name. Does this seem a little suspicious? Do you think the fact that a dublicate site exists is a big no no for purccchasing a site?

As said I'm very much a beginner with these, so any tips are much appreciated. I just remember reading that duplicate content will cause Google to rank you very low immediately. A contact of mine who has a successful SEO-business put his whole site offline once when he noticed it had been copied, and re-made all the content.

**Apologies for the typos in the text. For some reason it kept triggering the automatic spam prevention system and it was really difficult to get this posted!

Not sure why you're still thinking about buying it.

    Avoid. Thank me later :)

This sounds like one of the numerous types of site you can find on flippa.
All you are essentially purchasing is a theme, the seller will provide you with links to SEO resellers, has probably spent 2 months sending fake traffic to the site.
They knock out many of these template sites each month and they are worthless.
You won't be buying a real business.

Thanks for the replies guys, I definitely won't consider it then! I have a lot to learn about these. Perhaps I should think about building my own site instead.. is it typically easy to find high quality SEO resellers? What do you think about this outsourced SEO business model in general?

IMO, don't start a SEO business if you don't know SEO. Matching up wholesale link sellers with uninformed link buyers, with you in the middle, isn't going to rank anything and you'll have a ton of unhappy customers.

Whatever little SEO customers you muster up won't return, and you'll find it hard to sell the service if you don't understand how to rank sites.
