    Panda - Targeted the content farm sites(Sites with duplicate or shitty content and also over-optimization)
    Penguin - Targeted the offpage SEO i.e backlinks and Anchor text distribution.

    In crude terms:

    - Panda: on-page optimization
    - Penguin: off-page optimization

    If you don't know what on-page and off-page is, then I suggest you do a lil' more reading as this is essential before thinking of Google and its animals.

    Hope that helps

    Hello John,

    these 2 updates deal with different aspects of website performance. Basically, Panda polices what you do inside of your domain (content and stuff) and Penguin polices all the things you do for your domain outside of it (mainly it's about links).

    These are the things Panda doesn't like:

    * thin content;
    * duplicated content;
    * too many ads;
    * spammy content.

    As for Penguin, it mainly checks the quality of your site backlinks.

    If you fine if you:

    * Build relevant quality backlinks to your site;
    * Use varied Anchor Text for your backlinks;
    * Vary sources your links are coming from.

    That's basically it.

    Google Panda is a change to Google's search results ranking algorithm that was first released in February 2011. The change aimed to lower the rank of "low-quality sites" or "thin sites", and return higher-quality sites near the top of the search results.

    Google Penguin is a code name for a Google algorithm update that aimed at decreasing search engine rankings of websites that violate Google's Webmaster Guidelines by using now declared black-hat SEO techniques, such as keyword stuffing, cloaking, participating in link schemes, deliberate creation of duplicate content, and others. Unlike PageRank, however, Google makes all updates to this algorithm public.

    When was the last update?

    Nice answer Steelballs.
    @OP: I am sure you have understood the difference between two.

    If you are still unsure then:

    Here is how the panda looks like:

    and here is how penguin looks:

    Panda doesn't uses any weapons. On the other hand, penguin is more lethal and uses deadly weapons to kill the websites:
