I reside outside of the US so when selecting a payment option from amazon I was basically stuck to go with by check. All they asked for was my contact address however and last time i checked there needs to be routing numbers, account numbers, etc. on checks. What gives? Why don't they require this info?

Where do you reside? I don't know much about OUS banking but in the USA they need your legal name and address. The routing and account numbers only come into play when allowing direct deposit.

I understand that, but last time I checked, don't checks contain a bank account?

Yes, but not your bank account details. You're going to see Amazon's bank account details on the check.

Wouldn't it just be Amazon's account and routing number? I have never heard of a check having this information for the recipient.

so let me get this straight, you can just go to your bank and deposit a check with just your name/address on it with no bank details? Sorry for the noobie question I've never worked with checks before

The cheque will have Amazon's Banking details NOT yours. When you pay it in, the paying in slip or your bank card will have YOUR account details.

Yes, as others pointed out this above, your bank account info doesn't need to be on the cheque, it's irrelevant, because you will get the cheque via mail and you can cash it in ANY bank, which offers such service. Just bring your id and the cheque, the teller will check the validity and cash it eventually.
