I'm having a hard time understanding Google insights, because it seems like it doesn't match up with the Adwords Keyword tool data.
I typed in my keyword in insights, but noticed underneath it shows "top searches". The number one top search only gets about 40 searches locally per month according to the keyword tool, while the one I originally typed in gets about 10k exact.

    Abyssal miss,

This is a good question. There has been talk around the web debating the accuracy of these tools. For instance you can get different results for keyword volume depending on whether you are logged in or out of Adwords. The Google insights tool also has some discrepancies in search data.

Check out this post by SEOMoz of a study done early this year on the accuracy of rankings providers. Google insights is featured at the end of the post,

See also this post from SEOMoz about discrepancies with the Google Keyword Tool,

Hope that points you in the right direction,

    Shawn
