Should blogs/sites on Tier 1 be directly related to the money site, eg if product name is axmi then blog name could be axmiDOTbloggerDOTcom? I understand that the articles need to have keywords that point back to the money site but confused about how much of a relationship there should be.

It's not that important. In fact it's typically better to use more generic subdomains as something like productxyzreview.tumblr.com is more likely to get deleted by the web2 site's moderators. You're articles should be contextually relevant to your MS. That's the important part.

use a wide variety of names , this would look real .
I spread my tier 1 blog titles/ urls as follows
    50% keyword related
    40% niche related
    10% completely random
