I am confused by the new Youtube ranking system.

I don't fully understand. How do videos rank now? If its ranking by total minutes watched why does a video with 100 views that only 5 mins long rank better then a video with 30k views that's 30 seconds long. Shouldn't the 30 second one rank higher as it has more total time watched, better retention and all that? I ask because the last 3 days I did this to several videos and cannot seem to get to the first spot for keywords that where really easy to rank for before. (even have a video with 40k views thats 44 seconds long.

The video that's ahead of mine is only a minute long and has 5k views... less likes and subs too.

Theres a lot of things that YT take into account when ranking videos, its not solely on number of views or times watched. The length of time a video is viewed is whats used to increase the view numbers.

Things to take into Account are the age/quality of accounts, previous similar videos and obviously as you stated the likes, subs, views etc
