When researching keywords, what is your assumption when the top 10 results are held by the big guns (Wayfair, Wallmart, Overstock, Target etc..) and none by someone who is actually promoting the particular keyword via a dedicated site with link building.

I know that seeing ebay, pinterest, and amazon ranking is considered a good sign as they're usually there when the keyword is weaker, especially ebay and pinterest, sometimes youtube. However, the big guns I mentioned give off the feeling of this keyword is reserved for others, move ahead.

Would love to know your thoughts.

When you are targeting specific products and product lines, seeing those results on top is definitely not bad. Those monster companies RARELY, if ever... target any of their products with SEO. Therefore, what you are seeing is a bunch of companies that are putting no ACTIVE SEO efforts, however, they are still authoritative domains, but if you play your cards right, you should be able to outrank them without a problem.

If you saw a bunch of affiliate websites on top, then you'd know that the road to the top would be a really tough one.

Yes, these sites are normally place holders and to compete with them, you may want to get an aged domain to start off with.

Yes what Reyone said, chances are these pages are just ranking purely because the domain has huge authority.

We slap those guys around all day long when it comes to ranking particular products... don't fear them because they are the big dog. Sometimes it takes a little work but they are not the monsters that many of us perceive them to be.

In this case, perception is not reality.

If you did your keyword research very well, then I do not think those big guns will become much of an issue to you. They are ranking pretty well because of Authority. But that doesn't necessarily mean you can't out-rank them because they may not be doing some thorough SEO (Some are actually) or link building to the keywords. You definitely can if you:

    1. Get an old domain with good DA.
    2. Carry out great onpage optimization
    3. Create relevant and authority backlinks
    4. Create highly unique content.

From my experience.. if your first and second page is completely dominated by e-commerce sites, forget about ranking with a niche/review site. Even if those Amazon or ebay pages have 0 BL, PA, TF or whatever abbreviation you want to put behind it, if you're not e-commerce you're not playing. How do I know? I've just build a 15000 word niche site that targeted these type keywords.

From now on my criteria for keyword research is that first page should not have more than 4 e-commerce sites.

Well I can say from my experience, that you are not ranking a fresh site in any keyword where the larger companies are making money.

Maybe for some niche keywords that they overlook, but the serious keywords are almost impossible for a brand new domain name.

Some pretty interesting thoughts and I appreciate the feedback.

I have yet to try implementing an aged domain to ease the process, but It's pretty obvious to me as well that the majority of these sites rank based on their general authority, and aren't focused on the particular keyword. But as you can see for yourself, plenty of experienced members do tend to agree that's a warning sign.

Many would argue that google has their own reasoning to keep them there for financial reasons.

I however never tried to rank specific products during the years I've been doing this. It is usually sites dedicated to mini niches in review or ecommerce structure linking to affiliate sites. I wonder if that makes a difference in how you would treat the top 10?

It's generally more difficult to rank for a keyword where the top 10 is made up of mainly ecommerce sites. Aged domains should help speed up the process but they don't always work.
