In spite of all the panic that's going around this morning in regards to HG being down, I got a hold of one of Matt Cutt's Webmaster Help Videos.

In this short, couple-minutes video, Matt Cutts goes over how our site's downtime may or may not affect our rankings. He also mentions how there's some leeway in there as well.

Hope this will help some of you guys relax a little more and stop all these "My site is down" threads

Here's a couple of sources you can keep updated with:

Just waiting for some Google certified hosting service to crop up.
I am sure Matt will come with a video advocating how you will never be penalized using their hosting.

    Tip:

Calculate how [much] money you've lost due to the issue then contact customer support.
Once you get a hold of customer support, explain the inconvenience and ask that they not charge you for the next couple of months in order to make up for the loss.

This is funny..I had a clients site go down for about 1 week. During that time I was building links. Did a check while it was down and all were not in top 100...came back live and in a few days got 60% of the kw on page 1 & 2 where before he was page 7&8 LOL.....So I am ok with some down time :)

Well depending on the site, going down for a day costs me more than the entire years hosting. I normally don't bother with customer service, I just transfer my site out to a more reliable host. I've been with so many hosts now I know which ones advertise good uptime but is pretty crappy and slow. Hostgater and bluehost are definitely at the bottom of my list. Left them many years ago.

Well, obviously the amount of potential income will supersede the cost of hosting. Isn't that the whole idea lol? The objective of calculating the amount of loss is so that you have something to take back to the company. This helps the company/representative materialize your loss and increases your chances of actually getting something.

    For VPS servers I recommend:

    WiredTree and LiquidWeb

That's a nice little boost. How many times have you replicated this?
