I am a web designer and have a new web site (portfolio of my work). The keywords that I am am after are "freelance web designer","web designer" ... but there are VERY competitive and I am not an SEO expert.

So for the last few weeks I am building backlinks (that's my main and biggest "promotion" that I am doing for my web site) , but knowing my SEO level I don't think that I'll be able to rank good in google (at least not for a long time) with this kind of competition/keywords.And I need real people (clients) and not necessarily a top google position - if this is possible.

So my question is should I continue to concentrate on backlink building or should I buy targeted traffic to my site - still building links but not as exclusive as I am doing now ? Any tips/suggestions on improving real traffic (I can get junk traffic, but it doesn't help me) ?

PS: Now I am using SENuke + blog commenting + directory submission + starting with YouTube videos + Hummingbird and my traffic ( 90%) is coming from twitter, but mostly junk traffic - no real clients.

I think you need a better niche. It's nearly impossible to get ranked with this keywords. But I think the chances are a lot better if you would go for "web designer [yourlocation]" or something like this.

I had only bad experiences with "targeted traffic". It's often not really human and not really targeted. You buy 10'000 unique visitors and you get only 100 with cheap excuses. Perhaps you'll find someone who's serious but then you'll pay a lot I think. And if you think about it: Traffic is only for a short time, if you're doing good SEO it has a much longer effect.

    Good luck :)

PS: If you don't believe me, just order the lowest plan of traffic to a testsite and install there Google Analytics. You'll see there is a huge difference between the stats of the counter which offer them and Analytics.

Buy traffic for now and continue working on building backlinks to your site. That way when the organic traffic starts to pickup you can downscale your expenses on paid traffic or divert the funds for buying traffic to this site to another site that you might want to promote :)

I agree with Bytefaker, you should ignore the "fake" traffic options for now.

get on blogger or wordpress and create it more targeted to your area as when people are looking for and SEO consultant or web designer they will also want this person to be based locally so adding your location into the keyword will make you stand out and rank higher - now your search volume will not be as high, but would be alot more reliable to convert into a client.

    Good luck

I confirm, suggestions above are very good. You should mix both buying traffic and link building - try to track your PPC ROI.

And don't compete with this keywords, focus on 'web design YOUR LOCATION'. You can try to specialize in some niche too, like 'medical web design' (just example).

    try ads at StumbleUpon ads
    Code:
    www.stumbleupon.com/ads
this option works more than google adwords to get traffic (real traffic in your niche)

backlink is fuel to get good position at google, so do backlink building regularly, i never do "blog commenting" as you know your comment rate will appear only 7-10%. just my opinion :)
