So just found out today that one of our competitors is mass emailing a bunch of site owners who are linking to us pretending to be us and saying to take down our links or we will pursue legal actions. I'm pretty sure I know which competitor is doing this but I obviously have no proof! I had to post a message on our main site to say these emails are fake but site owners are emailing me and actually taking down our links! What should I do??? any suggestions??? Thanks!

Build more links! Also, send a quick message to your strongest links and let them know about this incident.

Dont worry brother, Karma is a real bitch. But yes I would pull a fresh index all of your links before the indexes like majestic pull them out and start emailing everyone now about it letting them know of the situation.

Thanks for the info. Any other suggestions? This competitor is really screwing up a lot of my backlinks and everyone is taking my links down because of this fake email. Is there anyway to get proof of who's doing this or report this somewhere somehow? Thanks again.

It blows my mind, look how low people are willing to go to get ahead these days. It's really getting nasty out there, money is drying up.

You guys are on a black hat forum in the black hat SEO section... These tactics really should not come as a surprise.

@OP: You had better start more link building. Also, ask the people to forward you the email as an attachment so you can analyze the headers and try to track them down.

Ouch, that sucks pretty hard. Sorry dude.

Reply to all messages letting them know it's a hoax.

The positive thing to take from this is your pretty certain you know who is doing it. I'm guessing you have scanned your logs and sussed out the offending visitor to your website, their location and kinda nailed it down?

The problem here is that your competitor is already thinking towards reasonably advanced black hat methods (Well in comparison with the average webmaster). If you do nothing and get through this then he will move to other tactics, if you retaliate then your basically in an arms race to the death.

If i was you i would first ensure i'm not relying on that particular niche for all your income. I would also isolate that website so that he cannot discover my other websites / companies. Think of this website as diseased and ensure it's quarantined from the rest of your stuff.

Once i have taken care of the safety aspect of it all i would research everything, look for footprints in his link building, discover other sites he owns, common reg addresses and suss out everything about him. Then develop a multi pronged attack to nuke the lot of it.

I'm a belligerent kinda guy though, you might want to take up Buddhism or smoke lots of weed, karma and all that.....

Sorry dude, it's a bad situation to be in :(

A battle to the death will be bad for everyone. Even if you drop his income 70% using the above tactic while he is only dropping yours 10%, that's still money lost and not worth it (even if the vengeance makes it feel like it is).

If you know who is doing this, i would recommend using a proxy & throw away email address and threaten him with destroying his business by using the above technique. Hopefully he will have some common sense and stop his direct attacks on you. If not, then go for gold using the above technique.

nah..i'd def recommend notifying them and let them know you've busted them..they might be like oh crap and stop right away.
if you know a lawyer, check and see if it's considered lible or defamation or something and threaten with that..

To be honest, I would just carry on doing what your doing. You must be doing something right for them to resort to such tactics. So rather than stoop to there levels, just keep owning the SERPs like it sounds like you are doing.

Bad enough with the neg seo!

Depending on your budget, you could control your links via your own network (quite some work involved), or rent 'em from Sape etc. Then your competitor won't be able to shoot down your links.

There is a famous thread on another forum about negative SEO that was posted in April 2012. It was one of the first proving the concept - that you could indeed do negative SEO now with Google's changes. In the thread the authors show that they pursued a two pronged attack, lots of fiver blasts of xrumer and scrapebox spam links to the victim, but also went through the link profile and emailed the owners of the site's best links and asked them to take them down. If you read the case study, you know it worked. Spam links aren't enough to hurt a site with good back links, but removing those good links plus loads of spam is a killer.

Since you don't know for certain exactly who it is:

Send an anonymous email to each of your competitors. Say "Hello, I'm one of the occupants of the top spots in the serps and somebody in this niche is neg SEOing me. I don't know who it is, and my solution isn't fair to those innocent, but I can tell you I will do everything I can to bury each and every competing site if this continues". Then tell them the methods you propose to use, and that you sincerely hope it doesn't come to this.

This is all a bluff of course. But hopefully this threat will make the offender realize what he's doing is mutually assured destruction.

I had to do this with adwords click fraud, and it worked quite well. Told each of the companies vying for top position I would have my $300/month fulltime VA doing nothing except clicking on them, taking all precautions to make each click look legit, which isnt hard becuz adwords click fraud filter is awful. Told them their budget will hit limit by lunch time, so settle the fuck down and play fair.

Maybe a little harsh but is sure worked. Show them you are a lunatic not to be fucked with.

Why not post about this in google webmasters forum and let your site know to the world and how a competitor is trying to get you lower rankings by getting your backlinks removed. If it becomes viral like wpmu story then google will certainly take action to keep your site manually propped up to save its own a##s
