I've been working my tail off with articles, social bookmarks, forums.

I think most of his links are coming from PPC content matching. he ahs the money, I don't.

SEO Elite onlys hows that he has about 290 links (paid version).

Any ideas on how I can beat him?

    you're missing the point.

I am comparing apples to apples.

Whatever tool I use, the important thing is the factor of 4 in the qty of links that the tools shows.

Thanks, I ran the 2 domains.

    Competitor - Pages 274, In Links 86
    Me - Pages 64, In Links 577

These numbers are different than SEO Elite and the quick look at G.

Does this mean anything to you?

It depends on what your site is, but I'd consider running a contest.

I know it is a WH technique, but do an essay contest or something, and offer a $100 prepaid card, or something like that as the prize. If you promote the contest properly, you can get the contest itself to go viral on social bookmarking sites, which will get other people to do your link building work for you.

Done properly, contests can deliver several times more value than whatever the prize you pay out is.

You have better in links than him which is positive. Try to get some good, valuable links:
    - from sites which PR => 3
    - sites which have a lot of BL
    - sites with similar topic to yours site

good idea or he could run a SEO contest kind of like the one here. Where the contestants just have to link to your site.

    Thanks again for your help....

I wonder if there any legal issues with running contests?

First, standard "I am not a lawyer" disclaimer.

AFAIK, most states allow contests, as long as no purchase is required (because then it becomes a lottery).

As long as you run a legit contest, you probably don't have too much to worry about. I'd advise rummaging around your local government's Website - you'll likely find some good info on running legal contests.

In my opinion all of those backlink programs are garbage. Google webmaster tools has a list of all the links that you have going out and coming into your site. Also they seem to count every single one.
