There's a competing site to one client I have who's competition has been going around slipping their links into the footnote links for competitors' wikipedia pages, stuff like the page of founders and what not. What is the best way to combat this? Do I notify Wikipedia, or will simply editing the page fix this nasty business? They've got a quite a few high value backlinks through this dirty trick... what would you do?

Why not just do the technique for your own site?

Complaining to wikipedia will just mean you lose another edge.

Same as above, I don't think Wikipedia will do anything useful, so I would simply look somewhere else for links.

I tried that same method of adding my link to the bottom of some wikipedia pages. It lasted for a few weeks then got taken down by moderators. I even created my own page but that too got moderated and removed.

Create a wiki account and delete the links with a brief explanation as to why. After that, any account that over-rides that edit is going to be suspected of bing a SPA (Single Purpose Account) and they will risk having ALL of their edits reviewed and reversed. Meanwhile, you can create another account and make legitimate backlinks to your client's sites.
