Competition has a terrible website, and 4 backlinks, and I cannot get their #1 spot, WTF?

    Just what the title says.

I have worked on this main KW for several months now on and off, I have a good 40 solid backlinks, with a nicely SEO'd wordpress site with tons of articles and nicely laid out framework.

    I am #3 on google.

My main competition has a TERRIBLE website design, barely any pages (maybe what, 5?) and has get this: *4* backlinks, 2 of them from his own website, and 1 from the company that helped him do the site.

This is completely ridiculous that I cannot take the #1 because of this guy! I honestly don't understand what's going on.

Do I just build links and build links on and on here? What am I missing?

Let me know if you need specific details.

Not all the links actually show up. I have a site with 5 links sitting at #2 and I know it is in the thousands. I even just got 50 .edu links and those do not even show up but the site moved from #9 to #2.

Grab some youtube videos related to your niche. Make 5-10 youtube channels that are keyword rich. Then post the videos in the accounts with different text for each. Only put your link in 1 time but make sure it is the begenning of your text so it shows in searches. it will show your video title and then you text with your domain first in google. This has got me past a few different people in the past that I could not seem to pass with content or BL's. Good luck and post back how it works for you.

To clarify, I've started work on it a few months ago, built links, and updated it here and there. Nothing hardcore.

Yahoo Site explorer shows 40 backlinks, while Majestic SEO shows I have more than 600... go figure

Yes, his is older. It was registered in 2007, and mine in 2009.

So ... what I'll never beat him because his site's older? C'mon this can't be the end of me, I will not go down without a fight!

Send some quality backlinks to your sites and you'll boost the ranking.

Again, age may be the factor here. Build some more quality backlinks, though, and it shouldn't be a problem taking the number one spot.

How are you checking their links? Many will only show a very small sampling.

He could have also been in this spot for a long time (aged site).

In either case I recommend just keep on building links and add more niche relevant content, you'll get it eventually.

Hah, you think that's frustrating, I have a site for my professional service that is stuck in the #5 spot. I am the only person on the entire first page who has any backlinks at all.

All of the other 9 sites on the first page have ZERO backlinks. Imagine that frustration.

Just goes to prove, it's not all about the backlinks.

don't sweat it just make a more appealing title and description than his and ppl will click you site instead of his.. i don't always click the number one site i look at the most relevant one and which one i think ill get what im looking for.

It could have to do with social algorithm that search engines are relying on more and more. If people visit your website and return back to the search engine it will slow the ranking of the site regardless of backlinks. If you have a number of different visitors/IPS visit your site through the search engine and end there browsing at your site you will see an Improvement of ranking with in a month or so... proving the your visitors have found what they are looking for...
