Yo, i'm just starting out and i've chosen my first niche to experiment with. There's a few big sites on page 1 though (Cnet, Amazon, which & trustedreviews).

I'm wondering will these be extremely difficult to outrank, even considering the exact keyword does not appear in their title, URL or description, simply because of the popularity of their sites?

It will be very difficlt and will take a lot of time to beat them using white hat methods. However if you have a good and properly optimized site you can surely do it. Also focus on long tailed keywords and get lots of great reviews and activity on your site.

It is almost impossible .. They have more staff, more money and more experience .. They are well established so to get close to them you need lots of time and effort .. but good luck .. they all begin with a single step

If this is your first site and those sites are dominating the first page then yes, it will probably be very difficult for you to outrank them.
Nothing wrong in trying though. As you said, it is your first experiment, so you should still learn the basics.
Noobs have a tendency to choose very competitive niches when building their first site because they see/think that's where the money is.
Latter when they have failed to rank or make any money they then reassess their plan.
Might be better to choose a less competitive niche to start with. Good Luck

All you need is time, mountains of content, hoards of daily traffic, and many many links from indisputable top-level authority sites. Easy, right?

Thanks people. I decided to change to a niche with less competition on page 1 and will go from here.
