This guy I know is paying a company monthly to manage their Adwords account. I thought Adwords takes like 10 minutes to set up once and then you're all set. What are they doing monthly exactly? How much work is involved?

Keyword research, split tests, optimizing ROI. A lot of analitical stuff here, it's just game of numbers. Of course you can put just simple capmaing and burn your hard earned monies, but that's not a way to go thus they hire a guy for doing this.

Keyword research is a one time thing, or at least once every few months, and the rest sounds like under a few hours of work a month.

ome times it is cheaper to outsource adwords. Whew good company that now how to make good remarketing you will get better result fore same money. Ofcorse you can try and error approach but this will cost you probably much more then paying good specialist. Just remember to check if they have adwords certificate from google.

I have been to google seminars and they actually tell you that it is good practice as an agency to charge anywhere from 6% to 20% of their adwords budget.

I just don't understand what they are doing exactly - I guess that's my question. You can only type like 10 words in the ad. Are they changing that around and seeing what gets the best results? Are they changing keywords? I'm trying to see how much work they are doing.

Adwords can make you thousands per month, so it makes sense for some people who do not have the time or expertise to manage it to pay somebody else to do it.

There are numerous people and companies that operate in that field.

PPC management is a big deal. You can get 50% more out of each dollar if you manage your campaign properly, so to relegate it to the junior admin assistant in your office is a poor choice. Far better to engage a PPC manager.

You mean Adwords right? Either way you're correct.

I'm interested in legit companies too, since SEO is nice but Adwords does get the job done too.

Exactly, Adwords is anything but "one time" if you want to run a ROI positive campaign.
There's literally thousands of factors involved, the keyword research takes hours and is a continous progress of refinement and exclusion.

You have to find niches, watch your competition etc.

I'm a software engineer so my adwords knowledge is limited, but setting up adwords without experience is a safe way to fail.

PS: We've been working with a number of SEO agencies and ~20% of the advertising budget is quite common for lower 4-digit monthly budgets.
A while ago we hired someone to do SEO and adwords - not because it's cheaper but because it needed more work and refinement than agencies could deliver with fixed plans.

    So yeah... "No. Just no."

Would you rather spend $10.000 USD a month on adwords to earn $100 USD on your own or you would rather like to spend $100 USD on adwords, pay $1500 USD to adwords expert and earn $10.000 USD a month in profit ?

They are just outsourcing the work to an expert who is crunching the numbers and optimizing their campaign for them.

From a guy that owns a company that spends 6 figures with Adwords per month and utilizes a PPC manager, I can tell you there are pros and cons to it. When we first started using them, we were really happy because they made us a ton of money, so the management fees we paid were arbitrary. As time goes by you start to resent them because they still take a huge chunk of money to manage the account, but really don't do a whole lot of work. This was in our particular case though. We hit a ceiling and there has been little growth over the last 2 years. If your management company continues to grow your business/campaigns then it shouldn't be an issue.

Everyone's case is going to be different. There is a large portion of companies that don't want to handle their marketing in house, so paying the 10-20% management free is a lot less than paying someone $40-60K per year to sit there and manage the campaigns (they end up doing nothing half the day anyways). Also think about local businesses. Most of the owners of brick and mortar businesses want nothing to do with PPC/Marketing. They want to do what they do...run their business.
