My blog is a ghost town, I think I am going to add some of my own comments posing as random people to make it look more active. Does anyone do this? Pros/cons? Should I?

I have a twist on this.

Wait for a spammer to comment, then use "quick edit" and change their text and remove their backlink.

Now you have a fresh comment from a different IP :)

I think it's a good idea. Google definitely loves those heavily commented pages. I might have a go myself.

No cons, after all google doesn't know what IPs left those comments, only you and your host do.

It's not a bad idea I've done it before with mediocre results. You can stimulate some conversation through fake comments.

This is the way I did it - I didn't post my own comments but I just edited others. I'm not sure the IP really matters though.

Maybe not, but I have multiple spammer comments an hour so it is just 1 less thing to think about :)

I do it regularly - usually to get the comments for a new post to "snowball".. Nobody wants to throw the first stone.

So just write something VERY provocative in the comments and watch your visitors to become agitated, disagree, or agree - it doesn't matter. All comments are good to keep your site alive.
