I have been using comas to separate my kw's in the title tag for quite a while. Then I recently talked to a friend that said to use the pipe character seen here: |
I was under the impression that the pipe is not a symbol and not to be used in SEO.

Any real life experience for title tags using either of these and if it makes any difference to use one or the other?

Thanks in advance!

Peace,
O

It might be true but I've done web work since the mid 90s and have never heard this.

I use pipes in my title tags and haven't noticed a penalty for it.

It makes no difference whatsoever in terms of ranking what symbol you use.

Commas, vertical rules (pipes), colons, semicolons... they all serve the same purpose.

Could you imagine something so small and insignificant actually making any kind of difference in rankings?

Well the theory behind what I read (I forget where) was that the pipe cannot be read by the search engines
stating that it is an ascii or html character or whatever
So, I have been using commas and this big time SEO guy (not really)
said "hey man don't use commas!"

I was just wondering if anyone had opinion on this and have some real world
data to back up whether it matters or not. At the end of the day I am not verly concerned with on page SEO anyways - I think it is about 10-15% if not less
and that strong backlinks are the key.

Thanks,
O
