There is a million posts every week about domain extensions. I am no expert of course, but I have my own opinions and having been into Internet Marketing for a while I have read a lot of those "threads of doom" about domain extensions.

I'm no expert and I'm here to learn, so if you think I am wrong, please say it so we can all know!

.COM

.com are the best obviously. I have personally noticed that when I own the .com for an exact keyword like www.blackhatworldrocks.com, it gives you quite an edge to rank for the keyword blackhatworld rocks. There was even a competition on here to see who would rank the best on google for the keyword blackhatworld rocks and www.blackhatworldrocks.com won.

It is my opinion and the opinion of most people that the use of more than one "-" looks spammy, and is penalized by google a little bit. So, I think the second best choice would be, either blackhatworld-rocks.com.

I would never use more than one "-". I would rather use theblackhatworldrocks.com than black-hat-world-rocks.com.

.NET and .ORG

I find those are the same, and I will always buy one of these if they are available for my exact keyword. I like them better than using .com with a "-". But the difference is quite slim.

If all .com, .net and .org are taken, I will try them all with one "-". If those are all taken, I will use another word that fits such as thedomain.com, domainblog.com, bestdomain.com, cheapdomain.com, etc.

.INFO

I have never bought a .info, and I will never do unless I planned on doing blog farms or stuff like that. It just doesn't look trustworthy, and I read that google penalize them because they are used a lot for spamming.

Don't buy .info!

Why would you buy one seriously? save $6? wft get a job!

(this is just my opinion!)

.XX

All other TLDs of regions aren't the best I think just by looking at the google serp in general, how often do you see a non .com, org or net in the top 10?

Not very often. I think they are good if you find something that looks good, or that makes sense. like Dave.tv if you have a youtube site, or buycars.ca if you target Canada. I think they are not as good for SEO as .com, net and org.

thats a pretty good clear up... i dont really get anything not .com but if anything it would be a .net

nice post man :) yeaaaaaaaaaaaah

Nice post man. I'm starting to get into affiliate marketing and purchasing domains. So this is really helpful. I've bought one domain so far, and it was a .org.

Also, how is the character "-" penalized by Google?

Dashes "-" is USE for SEO purposes of Domain. SE does NOT penalize you for using "-". Just dont use more than 2.

But of course if youre using the domain as a brandable store, then having dashes doesnt look professional.

Dashes also devaluates the domain(flipping)

But then again, using dashes for SEO purposes is my choice instead of opting for a .net

So if my competitor bought weightlossnow.com, then its obvious that I will get weightloss-now.com and SEO it to surpass his rank

Ohh... I see now. Because I was going to use a dash until I saw this thread. But now I know what one dash can't effect SEO. Thanks mate.

yep you don't see a lot of those .info shit in the premium words keywords category, nope no sir. as well as the dash ones.

Any opinions on sub domains? I have a killer tld and I want to use subs with it.

ranking for local listing i think .co.(country) is the similar to a .com because google knows your country and therefore display relevant info in your area

Is there a competition going on that I don't know about.
Who can bump the oldest thread?

Just out of curiosity is it better bump an old thread with good info, or start a nooby new one asking a question?

well i've found this excellent thread thanks to your bump, so I don't see how it was a bad idea! :)

I have the same question about sub domains as Zaphod. I have a few top level domains such as thatkickass.xyz. Does anyone have any insight on how a subdomain like
Vacations.thatkickass.xyz would be viewed by the search engines. I have read that the big G is now looking at sub domains as sub directories. I'm wondering if using sub domains this way is worth while or not.

I have plenty of .info's in the #1 position with over a million search results.
but .coms do seem to do better

I am using .info's with mass subdomains and ranking great. If your tld has good ranking the sub ride the wave
