I want to create a new website for a uk business. The problem i am facing is i don't want to use my real name and address and nominet will possible close the domain down if i use fake details.

One way to combat this is to use .com and whois privacy.

All my competitors that i will be trying to outrank have .co.uk extensions.

Will my site find it harder to rank with .com? I do plan on mentioning where the business is based on the website itself.

They will probably outrank you for local searches, yes. The trouble of getting a .co.uk domain is not that much - I'm sure you can find a way to get someone in the UK to own the domain for you.
