I was thinking, that if you copy someone's website, but show it only to bots - are you breaking any copyright laws?

Yeah it doesn't matter to who you show it I guess.

Sure, the fact that you're copying something is enough. It depends on the copyright owner really, some people don't check for copies.. others are very persistent about it.

I remember this British design agency who made a decent looking site and won some "best looking website" award. Everyone started copying their site and they were literally sending out take-down notices and handing it to the lawyers on a daily basis...

The biggest mistake is that people "rip" it... that pretty much always leaves a trace. If you take the general look and redesign it ever so slightly... they can go f**k themselves.

But the point would be that nobody is able to see it. Every human visitor would see something else.

That's not the point. The fact that you copied contents from others already violate copyright laws.
The only good thing that nobody will be able to see it, except bots, is that no one will complain because they wouldn't know that their content was copied.

Well that would be a classic case of "Ubi non accusator, ibi non iudex"

If they don't explicitly give you permission to copy the content, then yes, it would be breaking laws. If it's a WordPress site, you can rip the theme etc. as WP is all GPL, but content is copyrighted as soon as it has been written (the same as songs, poems, artwork etc).

If the website was made by a developer who is a united states citizen and the person taking the content is a us citizen he can be tried for copyright infringement even if nothing is on the books because technically when a developer writes his code it is his property. Yes if the website is copywritten stealing the code or making something that looks exactly the same would be copyright infringement.

But if it looks exactly the same you can be taken to court for copyright infringement too, provided that the images are the same which would be neccessary for it to look the same.

Asp and Php have nothing to do with the markup.

I copy websites all the time, even some of the big companies such as your local stores. Everything is fine if you re-edit the CSS and html coding with your own! :)
