I have had problems ranking a client's website only to find that they have used content from other websites for their pages.

I'm going to rewrite the content but i'm wondering if there is a specific way of going about this to ensure Google begins to rank the site again.

    What do you guys think?

I was in similar situation.I removed all the dupe content (18pages) and added 27 pages of unique content 600 words each.Did some internal link restructuring.
Rankings were restored completely in 3 weeks.

    Thanks.

I was intending to simply rewrite the content on the same URL so it is completely unique. Then ping Google, maybe a reconsideration request and some new backlinks?

Not a good idea i would say.Google has a quality rating for a site a whole. So even if you rewrite then the quality rating wont improve greatly. But if you put completely fresh content then google will reconsider and give a new rating all together.

I would suggest rewriting it 2-3 times then spinning it at word level. I suggest you then double check the output is readable which it should be if you spin at world level. Put it on the site and it should be ok.

While deleting the duplicate content, make sure to add at least 2-3 weekly updates of unique content and get them indexed. This will remove the duplicate content problems while at the same, your site seems more legit and more active.

Consider putting up a gadget on the frontpage with 'recent posts' or something similiar that links from the homepage to let's say last 3-4 posts / pages created. By doing so, you'll achieve both: user interaction and probably faster indexing.

The site sells and actual product and is a brick and mortar business. So spinning content is out of the question (we want people to buy, not to fool Google) and the site is more of a shopfront, the client doesn't want to update the site with posts, its not a blog.

The point about manual raters is a good one, although the site isn't very authoritative right now so i don't believe a Google rater has reached it yet. I think the lack of pages being indexed for keywords is down to the algo, rather than manual ratings.
