    Hi guys

I run a house cleaning business, and I finished a job 2 days ago, I got rushed out of the house and the person was about to leave. Today I got a message saying that I left the door open and that the dog ran out and got hit by a car. They have taken the dog to the vet twice, and I don't know what sort of state the dog is in. I havn't spoken to them over the phone as of yet, and I do feel genuinely bad, however I can not afford to be held liable and I'm not even sure if I left the door open. Honest to god though I think the chances are it is me who left it open, because I think I would have assumed the guy was about to leave anyway and the dog had been kept upstairs the whole time.

What's the best way to deal with this situation?

    I'm in Perth, Australia.

    Please Help, I am panicking..

    Thanks

Unless they can prove that you left the door open the court won't care my man. Your innocent and clients can't blame a death on you unless you purposely poisoned the dog etc. Tell him to go fuck himself.

Well I think you should stay calm for now, but I don't think anything will be happening to you. I wouldn't admit to leaving the door open unless you are entirely sure that you did. You can always give them money to help with their vet bills and hope that they don't try to bad mouth your business.....even though it will probably happen anyways.

Best of luck to you mate. Just remember to keep calm and think things through.

Yeah, I would say they probably will bad mouth the business, but it probably won't matter, it's not that well known. Yeah I'm worried how much the vet bills are if it's around ~300 or less, i'd be willing to pay..

Don't apologize as that can constitute admission of guilt, don't blame him neither. Just tell him that you closed the door after yourself and that's the end of the story.

Plan on having that day free from now on your schedule as well.

Don't admit your guilt (if it's even true) and if you pay them any money as compensation make sure they know that by you compensating them you are not admitting guilt

Deny everything and stand your ground and you will walk out smelling like a rose.

There's a chance that this is just someone who doesn't want to pay their vet bill. When it comes to blaming himself, his wife, his kid, or his neighbor, guess who he is going to blame? The person who might actually have to foot the bill if they admit fault.

People can make up a lot of stuff, and memory is a tricky thing. As everyone else has said, just don't play along. It wasn't you.

Just deny you left the door open. Can't do shit to you.

However, if you genuinely feel guilty, you should probably offer to help pay for the vet bills or just take the loss.

Unless they have video evidence to the contrary, you did not leave the front door open.

pfft who cares move on, his problem. Sounds to me like dude is just a opportunist, he dog got hurt and thinks he can put the blame on you. He was rushing you out the house why the hell he aint make sure his house was closed up and lock when you guys left, His property his Responsibility.

and even if you did leave the door open still say you didnt you shouldent be reliable for his dog (his responsibility) does or dont do, it wouldn't be your fault if burglars came in that open door right?
