I recently had a client approach me that is getting around 3M PVs a month. roughly 500,000 unique visits a month. The client DESPISES AdSense and will not use it to monetize. The site is a humor/viral site very similar to college humor or The Chive. They initially put up the site for fun, but something happened where it went viral through FB and they went from 8K visitors a month to 500K in a very short period of time.

Where the hell would I even start with monetizing? Should i just contact corporate partnerships and negotiate ad space? I have an idea how to consult the business but I want to get some input from this community.

Tell him it's worthless, and make him an offer. hehe

But jokes aside, just offer advertising space, for visitors to buy, or even try buysellads.
I actually wonder why the client doesn't want Adsense for monetization.

They have used it and still use it, but are very unhappy with how google is treating them with regard to payout and clicks, etc. Their account will be up huge one day, and then half the money will disappear before payout. So they are just really frustrated with how google is wrenching them around. So I guess technically they are not at "zero" revenue, but they are close to dumping google altogether, so at that point they would be.

It's a difficult niche to monetize, I have a site that's significantly larger in the same niche and it's hard work (I don't use Adsense, either).

BuySellAds is highly unlikely to work in the niche (and you will get terrible CPMs). We're using MGID to monetize our banner inventory and that's the best of a bad bunch from our testing.

Selling ads direct is a lot of work and the site doesn't get enough traffic to justify it (I am assuming you don't come cheap) and corporates tend to use a media buying agency and won't buy direct. It sounds like a lot of traffic, but it's not really in the humour niche.

I've found the best way to go in this niche (by a long way!) is an iPhone and Android app. Easy to get downloads and you'll have a jump start with an already established site/userbase.

    Good advice there meathead,
and OP, how long has this been going on?
surely the payouts will have increased in quality over the months,
or is it a site that is hot at the moment, and they think it is falling away, or do they consider it to be topical /seasonal
and then fade away, because although humour is competitive, the viral result surely is enough to sustain it longer term?
I dont understand why they would abandon G altogether at this stage?

I would suggest you to contact media buying agencies, send them your traffic stats and try to make a deal. It is not difficult to locate them.
You will wonder what sorts of clients these agencies have ;) . Many of them can place a link on a site you just described, especially with the traffic you have.

Make it someone else's problem. I would try to get as much $XX,XXX as you can in one transaction.
