how as a clickbank affiliate am i meant to start earning? i have made my own websites i have promoted products from clickbank and had nothing for it

In short, select a digital product of your choice on Clickbank and promote it.
If a user buys the product via your referral link, you get a commission. It is even explained on Clickbank's website http://www.clickbank.com/help/

It seems you already have started promoting the products so what exactly you want to know?

Either you forgot to link your affiliate id or your generated leads were poor and didn't buy anything. Visit the visitor tracking page ( or better track it on your own server).

are we allowed to direct link traffic to our cb product?

As per my knowledge CB allows all type of traffic. So there should be no reason why you can't!
