    Hey guys,

I figured I'd post my "crowdsourced casting" website idea here and see if I could get any type of feedback about the actual concept itself from all of the creative people here :). A site like this really only works if movie fans actually want to use it, and I just wanted to see if you guys think something like this is worth putting some time into.

So, would you use a website like this as a movie fan?:

    http://www.CastAStar.com

The idea for the website concept came about years ago, mainly because I was always having conversations/friendly debates/arguments with friends and family about which actor should play which character role in upcoming movies.

We'd always debate exactly just who should play who in upcoming movies or potential movies that are based on popular older movies and shows, books, real life events, stories of the past, and comics that my friends, family and I hoped/heard would one day be made into films. I noticed these sorts of "actor debates" were being had by other people in places like the IMDB boards/lists, IMGUR comments, Reddit comments, and on popular movie blogs, so it seems like this is a popular topic for a lot of people.

I would appreciate ANY type of feedback you can give me, and I would love to see which actors people here would choose for a lot of these movies. You can cast actors in all of the movies listed right now. You can sign up and cast a star using e-mail or Facebook. I'm open to all feedback and I can make any suggested or necessary changes if this website is something movie fans would like to use regularly. Would you use a website like this regularly? Could you see people on Facebook/twitter/etc using something like this a lot? Feel free to cast some actors and play around. Most big name actors are in the DB already aside from a few I've been adding. I guess I see it along the lines of a casual/fun game/website/concept that could potentially be a "social influencer" of sorts if enough movie fans actually gave their input on specific actors and characters. Interesting to see which actors/characters would "rise to the top" if enough people are casting their favorite choices.

Any feedback on the general concept/function of the website from movie fans or from people here on BHW that are working in the entertainment industry or working on entertainment-related websites and projects? What is this demographic like in your experiences, would they use this "socially" in your opinion?

First 5 seconds of seeing the site my first impression is the color combination is too childish. Reminds of Teletubbies.
The front-page looks like the usual joe that just installed a wordpress and found a theme with a slideshow on it ...

in 2 words : Needs a lot of work .... try again sir..

The website was just put up to prove the concept, so any focus now is on the actual function/concept of "crowdsourced casting". What do you think about that idea in general? But I agree with you that obviously if the concept proved to be useful/fun for people then design changes would need to be implemented along with a million other things aesthetics etc.

Do you have any feedback based on the actual concept of "crowdsourced casting" as illustrated by the function of this website? Do you and your friends have these sorts of conversations and debates about which actors should play which character roles in upcoming movies? Would people you know be attracted to this concept, not necessarily the website "display"? I'm personally always curious what the general "consensus" is when it comes to movie fan's preferred actors for upcoming roles.

You have an idea that can result in a multi-million business if executed right. I bet IMDB will be fast to steal it from you.

The website design is awful, however. Its not going to get viral in its current form.

I think its a pretty good concept. I can see it becoming something. I just think in order to make a website like that work you need to put like 90% of your efforts into designs. Your website design needs a lot of work, and it needs to be more user friendly.

I like the concept, I like the domain name.

Thanks for the feedback man, I appreciate it. Yeah just put up the site, python/django, got it functioning as intended to see how people react to the concept. I'd love for people to play around on it and drop me some feedback. Yeah it's weird with imdb they seem to have a few "disjointed" conversation channels where people are having these types of conversations in a few areas of the site. Actual movie pages discussion boards you can find these conversations and some people try creating "lists" or whatever.

So I would say that the way for the website to be more "relevant" than other popular sources would be getting enough registered users/passionate movie fans selecting actors and sharing their choices across FB, etc. That would be my intended goal with the FB app integration. Like I mentioned, these conversations proliferate the net in a few major areas in my experiences...but they are never in a "central" website that is designed JUST for this reason: crowdsourced casting. The entire function/purpose of this website is "crowdsourced casting", while other movie websites and entertainment communities serve lots of other purposes and interests. I think it becomes a "how many people would actually ACTIVELY be using a central casting resource like this?" issue...and there truly are not a TON of movies that "fit" into this type of website as you can see. Pretty much the movies listed are all I could get that "fit" the idea. So I'd probably be looking at no more than 30-50 movie pages total...

Just waiting for imdb to announce their "New Highly-Requested Feature" for casting actors in upcoming roles.

Thanks for the comments. Yeah I think the type of crowd that would be actively using this and sharing it with their friends is the type of crowd that would need certain design elements/social elements/"gaming" elements...

At the beginning it will probably apply only to a few selected movies, as you mentioned. But if you're looking at the bigger picture, what you essentially do is make the movie 'engagement cycle' longer. Typically, movies get a little interaction prior to release, then get talked about for about half a year and are successfully forgotten.

With enough traffic, you could take the industry to an entirely different level, where producers will be able to get an idea about the popularity of the movie prior to seeking investment, and you'll start getting revenues a year or two prior to the release.

Thank you for your thoughts, seriously. Your views on the concept reflect my own basically, especially regarding the "engagement cycle". There are a lot of issues, but there is also so much potential for something like this in my opinion.

The issue is always lack of resources (time money etc)/barriers to entry (time money etc)/getting ACTIVE traffic/the right type of traffic to prove the concept. Anyone with some popular movie-related fanpages out there? :D

To get feedback from creative people on a concept that MANY websites, companies, and people could have taken advantage of over the years, but they have not for whatever reason. It is always good to try and figure out that "reasoning" too. I've got "big ideas" popping into my head every day and lots of projects coming and going, and I bet many people here do to. Execution is what matters and there is only so much time/resources/user adoption strategies available out there for certain projects.

Might be a good idea to have a number of names under each role to make any page seem like it has content. People would be more likely to click through then.

Hey thanks for checking it out and leaving feedback. Yeah played around and made some changes, a few minor design edits, trying to get a few of the movie pages populated etc.

Looks like Batman vs. Superman just got an official "Lex Luthor" and an official "Alfred". Reading around I don't think too many people are happy with these choices lol.

Interesting actor choices for sure...I guess I can see Eisenberg as a "modern techy" Lex Luthor or something, I don't know. Jeremy Irons choice seems like it could work in my opinion, he was a good villian in die hard.
