When you create a blog, what kind of title do you try to use? I usually keep them short, but im just stumped right now. say youre promoting a certain video game, would something like <gamename>-cheats.com draw traffic?

depend on niche..url domain name is the anchor..i hv seen people put 4 keyword on their domain names..so its depend on your niche keyword..eg: redalert3-cheats.com or howtocookvegetable.com

I did a google search for best video games without quotes
I visited wikipedia for a list of best selling video games
I selected the video game halo 3 (8.1 million copies sold)
I used the google adwords keyword tool to search the keyword halo 3 cheats and sorted by approximate average search volume (the keyword halo 3 resulted in 5,000,000 searches by the way). 150 keywords were returned, but I selected the top 5 searched keywords below for further research:

    halo 3 cheats- 135,000 searches
cheats for halo 3- 18,100 searches
    halo 3 cheats- 9,900 searches
halo 3 xbox cheats- 9,900 searches
    halo 3 cheats xbox 360- 8,100 searches

I then did a google search for the following keywords and had the following number of page results:
"halo 3 cheats" blog- 2,680,000 page results
"cheats for halo 3" blog- 8,490 page results
"halo 3 cheats" blog- 527,000 page results
"halo 3 xbox cheats" blog- 8 page results
"halo 3 cheats xbox 360" blog- 2,530 page results

I selected the top blog for each keyword:
    Code:
    www.blogcatalog.com/topic/halo+3+cheats/
    Code:
    http://www.cheatmasters.com/cheats/25089/Halo_3_cheats.html
    Code:
    http://gamersdaddy.com/halo-3-cheats-for-xbox-360/
no blogs found for "halo 3 xbox cheats" blog
    Code:
    http://www.free-game-cheats-blog.com/2008/09/halo-3-cheats-xbox-360.html
I then entered the url of each blog in the google adwords keyword tool to find keywords related to the content on each site.

Keywords I selected for each site were:

    Code:
    www.blogcatalog.com/topic/halo+3+cheats/
    - (search resulted in 200 keywords)
    halo cheats- 165,000 searches
    halo cheat codes- 22,200 searches
cheat codes for halo- 8,100 searches

    Code:
    http://www.cheatmasters.com/cheats/25089/Halo_3_cheats.html
    - (search resulted in 200 keywords)
cheats for halo 3- 18,100 searches
    halo 3 cheats- 135,000 searches
    halo cheats- 165,000 searches
    halo cheat- 49,500 searches

    Code:
    http://gamersdaddy.com/halo-3-cheats-for-xbox-360/
    - (search resulted in 150 keywords)
    halo cheat code- 1,900 searches
    halo cheat codes- 22,200 searches
    halo 3 cheats- 135,000 searches

    Code:
    http://www.free-game-cheats-blog.com/2008/09/halo-3-cheats-xbox-360.html
    - (search resulted in 198 keywords)
    halo cheat codes- 22,200 searches
    halo cheats- 165,000 searches

Below are the page results for my top keywords as well as the number of adwords ads:
halo cheat codes- 442,000 page results (1 adwords ad)
"halo cheat codes"- 21,100 page results

halo cheat code- 454,000 page results (0 adwords ad)
"halo cheat code"- 1,770 page results

halo cheat- 859,000 page results (3 adwords ad)
    "halo cheat"- 32,500 page results

"cheat codes for halo"- 775 page results

halo cheats- 2,750,000 page results (2 adwords ads)
    "halo cheats"- 45,000 page results

halo 3 cheats- 4,030,000 page results (4 adwords ads)
"halo 3 cheats"- 2,460,000 page results

cheats for halo 3- 4,090,000 page results (5 adwords ad)
"cheats for halo 3"- 879 page results

Based on my research this is a pretty competitive video game. Backlinks are going to be very important with this project. I would use article marketing, forum posting, social networking and bookmarking sites. I would use a blog title that uses the keyword halo 3 cheats because it's a keyword used on two of the number one blogs I found and a tighter niche will have better results for a new site (the other keywords above are too broad in this case). The CONTENT of the site, in order to get search engine traffic, needs to focus on less competitive keywords. I created my own keyword combinations using the keywords I found on the top blogs above:

halo 3 cheat code- 1,300 approximate average search volume according to google adwords keyword tool. (There were 4 longtail keywords found using this keyword)
halo 3 cheat code- 1,270,000 page results
"halo 3 cheat code"- 5,540 page results

halo 3 cheat codes- 14,800 approximate average search volume according to google adwords keyword tool. (There were 35 longtail keywords found using this keyword)
halo 3 cheat codes- 3,720,000 page results
"halo 3 cheat codes"- 16,500 page results

halo 3 cheats code- 140 approximate average search volume according to google adwords keyword tool. (There were 0 longtail keywords found using this keyword)
halo 3 cheats code- 3,240,000 page results
"halo 3 cheats code"- 2,150 page results

halo 3 cheats codes- 1,900 approximate average search volume according to google adwords keyword tool. (There

were 2 longtail keywords found using this keyword)
halo 3 cheats codes- 1,160,000 page results
"halo 3 cheats codes"- 20,700 page results

There are a good number of tools available for this type of research. If I were not in my office, I would use SENuke to find the least competitive keywords, create a blog with one of those keywords and then proceed to get backlinks to social networking and bookmarking sites using the tool. It's still good to know the basics however :)

P.S. Slow day in the office...
