Guns Stolen From Gun Range Operated by Harvey Police

    May 11, 2010

    BY FRANK MAIN, Crime Reporter

More than 20 weapons have been stolen from a gun range operated by south suburban Harvey?s police department ? and the State Police and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting in the efforts to recover them, officials said today.

Harvey authorities have told federal and state investigators that 21 firearms were stolen at about 9 a.m. Monday from a trailer at the range, said Tom Ahern, a spokesman for ATF.

An assault rifle like this MP5 -- and 20 other guns -- was stolen from a Harvey Police gun range, sources said.

Sandra Alvarado, spokesman for Harvey, said the city also will ask the Cook County Sheriff?s office for assistance. A message was sent to departments across the Chicago area alerting them about the burglary, she said.

The weapons included MP5 and AR-15 assault rifles, sources said, adding that some weapons were left behind.

The range is located at 153rd and Campbell ? about half a mile from the Harvey Police Department?s headquarters at 15301 Dixie Highway.

The Harvey Police Department has come under scrutiny in recent years for its handling of murder investigations and for corruption convictions involving its officers.

A 2007 raid on the department by the Cook County state?s attorney?s office and other agencies uncovered untested evidence. It was processed, leading to murder and rape charges.

Last year, Officer Archie Stallworth was sentenced to 12 years in prison on a federal drug conviction. Also last year, Detective Hollis Dorrough was sentenced in Cook County Criminal Court to three years in prison for returning a gun to a gang member?s family.

I remembered when I visited Chicago a few years ago, one thing I noticed...the cops

Many of these guys had the same look as the prisoners in my area, the only difference, they had a uniform.
Of course, this was simple observation, but still...

This is most likely setting the stage for a False Flag. Somehow these weapons will be found in the the possession of a suspected "Tea Party Terrorist" to further demonize lovers of Liberty and Freedom. The Reichstag Fire is coming soon.

considering that a good percentage of the cops are corrupt, that's understandable. :D

The AR-15s are not a big deal as those are really just .223 sporting rifles. They are black though and look scary. The MP-5s on the other hand have a three position safety with (1)Safe, (2) Semi-auto and my personal favorite, (3) FULL AUTO, otherwise known as "Group Therapy"! :D

I think you had better re-think your statement about AR-15's......the only difference between the M and A is that one can go full auto. Otherwise, same ammo and I would not recommend getting downrange from those.

MP5 is a close range weapon. It is useful for CQC.......

A weapon on full auto is not particularly accurate and has a tendency to "travel upward".....

I was US Army......could hit target 300 meters bulls eye with NO scope, only ironsights. 350 Meter target headshots with NO scope. Have been training with guns/rifles since age 6. Dad was a USMC Sgt (reason for the training at such an early age). So, while I respect your opinion, it is not really based in fact.

Anyone here on the board that has military experience can tell that you probably have no military experience, and that is ok. It just doesn't help you to accurately describe deadly weapons, that is all. :)

I tried to put it nicely, and I hope that I did not come across nasty. There was no intention on my part to do so, just offering some actual/real-world experience based advice.

The AR's have so much energy that many times they will go right through metal (depending on thickness and distance) and even some body armor. So, the police will be sitting ducks if they go up against the criminals who have AR's.....

Watch the film about the two bank robbers in LA. They were armed with AK's and see the kind of damage that they did.

Either weapon is no toy or sporting rifle. They spell death for the individual or individuals who are unlucky enough to be on the wrong end of the barrel.

Let's hope that these rifles are recovered quickly.

Normally I would not respsond to a post such as yours but I found something vaguely irritating in its implication.

Knowledge of firearms does not necessarily imply or indicate past military service, nor does past military service necessarily imply or indicate accurate knowledge of firearms.

The original AR-10 (Automatiac Rifle, Model 10) was developed by Eugene M. Stoner in the 1950s, chambered in 7.62 NATO (.308) but found little acceptance as a battle rifle, this at a time when such weapos were becoming heavier and heavier and despite its alloy construction the AR-10 was considered to be a bit much for the average ground pounder to lug around. At the behest of the United States Army, further work was done on the design and the AR-15 (Automatic Rifle 15) resulted, chamberd in a new round .556 NATO or .223 Remington in an effort to develop a smaller and lighter rifel which might be more easily controlled during fully automatic fire.

Generally accepted by the Armed Forces of the United States by 1967, the AR-15 was given a new nomenclature as the M-16 or M-4 and underwent a series of improvements and modifications resulting in such designations as M-16A, M-16-A1, ect with the Alpha character having nothing to do with the select fire capabilities of the firearm. The AR-15 designation was then essentially relegated to civilian versions of the model which are not readily capable of conversion to full automatic fire due to internal differences and the lack of a cross-drilled hole to locate the full auto sear. Most of the M-16 components can however be installed in most AR-15 lower receivers but such installation will not result in full auto capabilities as there is no room for the auto sear without failry extensive and accurate modification of the lower.

All M-16s are indeed AR-15s in spirit and basic design but all AR-15s are not M-16s in form or function.

The civilan versions of the AR-15 aremanufactured in many forms, with many sights, flat top or handled uppers, fixed or collapsible stocks, various foream configurations but none; repeat, NONE are capable of full auto or three shot burst without extensive and professional modifcations to the lower receiver as well as subsequent installation of the proper components into both the uppr and lower receivers. By the way, modifying any AR-15 rifle, pistol or lower receiver to accept full auto components constitutes manufacturing a machine gun, which since 1986 has been prohibited to all except licensed manufacturers, police departments and other governmental entities and carries a very stiff penalty. Don't go there.

Although a highly effective and light weapon, given the choice, I prefer an AK-47 to the M-16 because of the higher transfer of kinetic energy transferred by the larger diameter bullet and the inherent toughness of the design.

I do agree with you that being on the business end of any firearm is not the place to be if it can be avoided. As far as the ability of the .223 to penetrate body armor, it can be done with the right round but not guarranteed. My CETME G3 variant in 7.62 NATO would be virtually assured to penetrate BOTH sides of a vest, leaving something akin to the Holland Tunnel in between. It's all in the power and type of round fired.

If you'd like me to post my review of the M-60, I'd be happy to do so as people need to know how many lives were cost by the United States Army while spending 30 years trying to "improve" on the otherwise nearly perfect design on which it is based, the German MG-42.

Of course an AR-15 is a dangerous and powerful rifle. I think the point made here is that it is a rifle you can go buy at the store whereas an MP5 is full auto and much more difficult for a gangbanger to get their hands on.

Now that was what I was looking for! :)

Huge difference between the one before-mentioned post and this one. This one is very informative and well-thought out. That is what I was trying to say..........I did not mean to irritate in any way.

Now, having fired the M-60 (I know, it is time-stamping me) I can tell you that is another weapon NOT to get in front of......it goes through 3 inch armor, cuts men in half and so on.....you get the picture.

Now, imagine the police battling it out with thugs armed with M60's.........sure the bad guys will have limited mobility, but man.....talk about damage and lethality.....

As far as the characters go, I should elaborate and say that gun dealers will basically espouse that idea, one is military and the other not........

Based on experience, the weapon has a tendency to "travel upward" on full auto and that it why many will prefer the 3 round burst or just plain semiauto....which can be very fast depending on how fast you pull the trigger.

I agree, don't go modifying the receiver.......it is not legal.

Here is a pretty good article (seems to be accurate) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AR-15

Another: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M16_rifle seems to be done nicely about the M16 (my rifle in the US Army)(mine was an AR-15 but it was an M16 made by Armalite).

I would like to see your opinion on the German MG-42. I am not that familiar with it.......

By the way, again, a very nice and informative post above and keep up the good work! :)

Ah well, that's great lol. I live in Chicago. The cops really don't give a shit... we speed like 25 mph over the speed limit past them but they're just searching for the next Dunkin' Donuts. They're a real joke. Now they're putting in speeding cameras and firing the police men.

Harvey isn't in Chicago. It's in the south 'burbs.
I grew up in the south 'burbs and let me tell u something.

3 of the top 10 worst towns in the entire USA in terms of crime and violence are in the south suburbs of chicago...what does that tell ya.

@voxclan - yes the cops look like that here. lol. which brings me to a good point.
If you ever come visit here.....DO NOT FUCK WITH THEM.

and more importantly if they ever fuck up - guess who's got their back? Mayor Daley.
He guards them with his life because he has them do his dirty work to clean up the city.

@ladyhye yeah cops dont care when you speed 8 out of 10 times because they probably have something else more important to do..like arrest someone's ass. they are putting in camera's for people who run red lights.

I grew up across the street from a chicago cop who worked on the south and west side of the city (10-15 years ago when it was worse than it is now, and it still sucks)
he said he literally pulled his gun every single night on the job.

    Thanks Man!

I own a properly registered Essex Arms M-16 as well as several other NFA firearms, including a couple of MAC-10s, a for-real BREN and a few more, having purchased these well before prices went through the roof.

The M-60 is a derivation of the MG-42 which was referred to as "Hitler's Zipper" due to its rapid fire rate; around 1200-1500 RPM, depending on the condition of the internal springs and cleanliness of the weapon. M-60s were often subject to feed cover failure and melting of internal rubber parts due to overheating; which specific problem has been fixed but also whoich problem should never have occured in the first place. The MG-42 merely need to be re-calibered and all would have been well. The US Army tried to slow it down and that caused everyone to miss the whole point! Rivet failure was also shown to be a MAJOR issue as well as modifications to the original gas system of the MG-42 caused problems. Guys in The 'Nam died when the guns froze or blew up because they could not return fire.

The M-60 is often referred to as "Th Pig" because of its hunger for ammunition; HUNGER FOR AMMUNITION IS THE POINT and its tendency to eat up poorly manufactured internal parts but that's what you get when you buy parts from the lowest bidder!

Me WANTS as many rounds as I can get out on the bad guys in as short a time as possible!

By the way, "irritation" is cast aside. A good challenge is honorably met and responded to and you have done so. All is well.

I contend that the 191A6 Browning is the way to go and if I can find the vid of me firing mine, I'll link to it. I know I have me dumping the mag on a .45 MAC-10 but the tape grew mold. Anyone know how to get mold off a VHS tape? I gots all my guns in long term storage right now and for the most part am only shooting my pistols and revolvers, so it would take some time to do up new vids of ratty-tat-tats.

By the way, it took me like FIVE logins to be able to post his, so would the MODS PLEASE FUCKING FIX THE ISSUE?:(

    I prefer
the Ruger Mark II .22 target pistol with a "special custom made accessory"
    the Mossberg JIC II
a 10 lb bag of powdered aluminum
a 10lb bag of iron oxide,
    a cigarette lighter
a few empty beer cans. ( Perhaps emptied on the way to the task )

Give me that, I'll disable an entire tank company while they sleep. ( in theory )
    THEN we'll fight.

Imagine their surprise when they go to roll ahead and their tracks fall off
or they go to load a shell but the barrel metal is melted by thermite
so as not to receive it.

Of course, of any gun in the world, I would select the Remington XP 100
    set-up & sighted-in by James Files.
    (Just ask JFK)

Have automatic weapons and you're "just asking" for attention
from other people with automatic weapons.

    I second this notion.

As for mold, if it is on the actual TAPE ... no idea.
But anyone who worked in a video store in the 80's
could probably swap the tape into a new case for you.

Could do it yourself if good with FINE tools.
May need to wind the bobbins by hand though ( different sizes )
and it will take an hour and if you do it the wrong way
    the tape will be useless.

In Detroit if you get caught with a gun in a bad neighborhood or even dope they will take it and your money and tell you that you got 5 secs to get out of sight.

But anyone and every gun is just as dangerous to me

I didn't read all those words above, but Tully seems to miss the point that the 5.56 x 39mm round for the AR-15 is the same as the one used in the M-16. M-16's no longer go on "full auto" as it's a waste of ammunition, rather the selector switch goes to "3 round burst".

Marine Corps small arms philosophy has always centered on the idea of a "well-aimed shot" vs. "spray and pray", and analysis of combat statistics in Vietnam support the idea that you have a better chance of killing the enemy when you actually aim your rifle at them before you pull the trigger.

    Duh.

The AR-15/M-16 is a weapon intended to be aimed at significant distances. In prone position, hitting a 12" bullseye at 500 meters, 10 out of 10 times, is expected, and not particularly significant. Cooks, admin pogues and truck drivers are expected to be able to fire that weapon with that level of accuracy from that distance from the prone position.

So the whole idea of "volume" of ammunition running through that weapon seems pretty theatrical; something dreamed up by Hollywood to impress testosterone-laden teenagers. Besides that, what civilian is ever going to be involved in some kind of "set piece battle" where everyone agrees to meet at a certain time & place with their weapons and at the designated time, they all start shooting? Unless you are military or a fill-time guerrilla fighter, you aren't going to be carrying around a long rifle of any kind 24 hours a day. A shotgun is a better weapon for home defense, and a pistol is a better option because you can have it with you and/or accessible all day long.

"Uh, excuse me Mr. Luby's mass-murderer, can I have a "time-out" while I go out to the parking lot and get my AR-15 from the trunk of my car? I'll only be a minute. K, thanks. Back in a second..."

I saw an interview of a woman that was in that restaurant, unarmed while those people were getting killed. She had left her pistol in the car, because she didn't want any trouble for carrying it into a public restaurant. I can still see the expression on her face, the rage & frustration she felt while all those people were getting killed and her pistol was in the glove compartment in the car out in the parking lot. Instead of having it available to save some people's lives, instead she had to stay there terrified and helpless while a mass-murder killed people who went to a restaurant for something to eat.

So, you weapons-fappers can fap-fap-fap all you like over whose imaginary gun penis is bigger and sprays larger wads of gallons of imaginary jizz, and I hope that you hold each other afterwords and whisper kind and loving remembrances to each other afterwards, while basking in the afterglow of your fiery, double-barreled passion. But for the rest of us "normals" that just want to have the opportunity to protect ourselves and our freedoms without making a career or a hobby out of it, a small, functional, concealable large-caliber handgun of just about any reliable variety is "good enough". 1) Does it shoot? and 2) Will it kill the average motherfucker? are the only two questions we need to know about.
