    Hi all,

    I recentlly found a website which appears to be PR8 - http://articletornado.info/

However, I am pretty sure in reality that this site doesn't have anywhere near page rank 8...

This tool (http://www.prchecker.info/check_page_rank.php) used to work for showing up fake page ranks, however it is also saying that the page rank is 8.

Any one got any ideas how to tell if the page rank is legitimate these days?

    Thanks

Using that grey matter between your ears. Understand to obtain a legitimate PR8 domain you need a TON of high PR backlinks. This domain has nothing for backlinks. How could anyone but a fool believe this is a legitimate PR8? Domains only get PR by ONE METHOD - backlinks from other PR domains. If you don't find PR8, PR9 or PR10 backlinks to an advertised PR8 domain then it's fake. No more research or tools needed. Took me 10 seconds to see this is fake.

I'm looking for a way to differenciate between a real and fake page rank with some kind of tool, not to just take a guess at it.

For the sake of argument, lets say the link in question was a fake PR4, so it doesn't really look out of place, how would we be able to tell its not a real PR4?

Totally agree with kvmcable looking at the backlinks for the domain is usually an instant tell. If you want to use software i use this online tool as a double check http://www.rankchecker.com/pagerank-checker/ ( not affiliated in any way )

    Thanks

I tried that tool and it said its PR8 - valid.

I just want a quick-fire snapshot way to tell what the REAL PR of a site is for when I am buying links in bulk. There must be something out there that works?

To be a real PR4 would require backlinks from PR4 or higher websites. Several backlink checking tools available out there to do serious checking.

If this site were a PR1 I'd probably say it's fake. It has no backlinks except a couple WHOIS scraper links. Where can it possibly get any PR from? Real PR websites have PR backlinks. Without PR backlinks I don't care what the domain PR says - it will never stay without PR backlinks.

Fake PR isn't a mystery. This domain was redirected during the last PR update and Google gave it the destination site's PR (PR8 domains are mostly redirected to Twitter). Once the domain obtains the destination site's PR rank then the redirect is broken and a real website put on it. It will hold the PR until Google comes around in a few months and updates again and then it will be a PR0.

Also look at archive.org wayback machine. If no older snapshots exist then always a fake. Legitimate sites that have existed for any length of time have snapshots in archive.org. Archive won't snapshot a redirected domain.

    Good luck

My point exactlly... but it so obviously isn't real PR8... so whats the score? How can real page ranks be verified to avoid paying for a PR3 which may actually be a PR0 for example...?

Drop the domain name in MajesticSEO tool and look at top backlinks. That will give you a quick and free option to inspect backlinks for PR.

"My tool" shows 6 backlinks, top with pagerank 3, all others with pr0 and shows Pagerank 6, but says it might be only 1.3
