Hey all, I'm about to purchase a long expired domain from a private seller.

I've used the Wayback Machine to check what it has been used for in the past, all indicators are showing that it started out as an IT services business back in 2004, then 301'd to the same owner's blog for the next 13 years. The guy who owns it now bought it in a drop auction and has had it parked since 2017.

I've checked Ahrefs and there are no current or historic backlinks to the domain.

The only other report I've run shows it having a Page Rank of -1 which threw up a red flag for me.

Is there anything else I can do to check that it won't run into problems when I set up a new site on it?

    Thanks

It just like a fresh domain. If there are no spammy things, and you need the brand, just take it.

I would use also Google search operators. for example, search on Google for "site:yourdomain.com" to see if there are links still ranking.

above one didn t worked in my case.

please take experts opinion. I recently bought one expired domain. It was clean where ever i checked. Later after buying, I came to know that, the site is penalised for spamming and google declined my request for listings/adsense. Now i gave them a new request to review it but dont have much hope.

If you are thinking about building a new site or blog, consider purchasing an expired domain rather than a new one. You'll have to build new content and backlinks, and domain age authority will only come with time. With an expired domain, you can leverage its existing SEO value to start ranking quicker right away.

Thanks and yes that's something I wanted to do to rank faster. But unfortunately I can't find anything with good enough metrics and a brand that I'm in love with. The domain I'm talking about in this thread is purely for the domain name. It's the EMD of my brand. And the guy selling it wants a pretty penny!

The negative PageRank is not an issue since that metric it's not public anymore, it's probably like an N/A.

No backlinks? Then are you purchasing it just for the name? In that case you wayback test is enough. You can run a google index test but I think it might not be indexed anymore since it expired long time back. No need to read much into PR though

If it’s only for branding purposes, I think that way back machine test is good enough. A brand is a brand and therefore should exist with its unique identity. Any historical link by way BLs in place MIGHT jeopardize your USP. So start work on it confidently and focus on building a name, IMHO.
