This site was pretty much in position 2 for its main keyword for the last 6+ months. You can see the fun begin on 4/17:

Note that today it is currently in position 5, but was in position 11 when I checked it a little bit ago. Bouncy.

That is not penguin. Penguin hit on April 24. This was most likely to panda update...and you recovered nicely in all consideration of what has been happening here.

So what happened on the 17th? It doesn't look like you were affected by Panda or Penguin, although you took another dip on the 28th.

The 17th was when Google made a "mistake." There were a bunch of threads of where people were saying their sites were gone and then most of them came back the next day. I think it was related to Penguin even though Penguin was technically a week or so later. They were probably testing some stuff out with live data.

The site that has been #1 for my keyword forever is some three page site with one linking domain but it has been around since 2005 and is an EMD so I guess that helps it. My site has only been around since 2009, although mine is also an EMD (with hyphens, lol).

My site is like 100 times better in terms of content that is actually helpful to the reader AND their site doesn't even have AdSense on it.

    Number 2 is wikipedia.

Number 3 and 4 are youtube.

    Number 5 is me.

Kinda confused why you posted this as well, whatevers going on with your website clearly isnt penguin related and if its some kind of proof that you can survive penguin then, to be honest, we already know that

The same thing happened to one of my sites.

Basically up and down rankings that are completely random. A lot of movement.

One of my sites keep oscillating between no. 4 and not even in the top 100 for a keyword. Really weird.

Just normal stuff, no spam, no automation. Links from relevant websites.

But I haven't built links to this site in months.

It seems that Google is flipping a switch. One day you get the normal results, the next day you get the weird results.

    Makes you wonder, huh...

Google "how to make a chart in Excel."

Site is still in position 14 wtf. Maybe Google isn't going to flip the switch back.

Yes. I don't trust keyword ranking tools. Sometimes they're wrong. And sometimes they steal your dataz [IMG]

Well my site seems stuck at position 14. This blows.

Maybe I should do a bunch of stupid social media crap that I hate and see if that helps the ranking:

    - make a Facebook page for my site (pointless and stupid)
    - make a YouTube video for my site (videos advertising a site are the most worthless things ever)
    - make a Twitter account for my site (absolutely no purpose if you know my niche)

I hate all of those things but apparently Google loves them.

Here are the people on page one for my keywords now:

    1) Wikipedia
    2) Some EMD with 3 pages and no AdSense with decent relevant content (this guy used to be in #1 and I used to be #2)
    3) Youtube
    4) Youtube
    5) Some store with 3,000 indexed pages
    6) Sales site
    7) Sales site
    8) Relevant forum thread
    9) Informational site with decent content
    10) Some dude's local business (it's not a local keyword, though)

    11) Youtube
    12) Youtube
    13) Big ass information site
    14) Me

Important note: None of the sites on page 1 have AdSense.

    Conclusion:
the presence of AdSense doesn't improve SERPs even though Google stands to make more money from ranking you higher
